Just picked up a 92 Legacy...

Hi all. I just pick up a 92 Legacy from a fellow board member. I need to do some 4EAT work to it. I found a link to some STi tranny 4EAT manuals from a past post, are these the same as the US version manuals? I would post a like to them but I can't find it. The Legacy I have has a STi 4.44 4EAT with the 4.44 out back.
I haven't looked at the trans yet but I have a feeling it's the TQ converter. I was told that the 4EAT shares internals with some Nissan trans, not including the front housing and the coupler in the rear?
Should be a fun little project car!

What's shakin Dan? Welcome to the board!
I haven't heard of an STi 4EAT, nor have I heard of a Legacy with a 4.44 out back (Arent they 3.73?).
Is the rear end stock?
At any rate, have you diagnosed the problem yet? Does the car drive? Could be the clutch packs or the TQ converter. I remember you saying you had a working tranny that came with the car, right? Just swap it in. The EJ engine's aren't heard to work on, and I've heard of people installing trannies in their garage with hand tools and jack stands.
You could always do the Manual tranny swap. Dave (DLC) did a write up on it on the main site (
www.legacycentral.org) about it.

3.900, that's right. Aren't all Turbo's 3.9 rear ends? Why did I think 3.73? Maybe that's the rear end in my truck or something...

BAC...small world huh...
It's got a 4.44 rearend out of a Legacy GT with WRX axles. I have 3 4EAT. The stock one 3.9 (bad reverse), another JDM 4.44 (good?), and the JDM 4.44 in the car. I just got it so I haven't had time to tear it apart. Lifting the trans is a 2 person job. After looking it over, I think I have done much worst jobs on past cars. I say that now
I am going to disassemble the 3.9 trans for the fun of it after I get the correct manuals. If I understand how the trans is built and I'm able to reassemble it then I may try to rebuild the other 4.44, or just put the 4.44 gear in the 3.9 trans and rebuild it. I have most of the special tools needed, so why not.
I guess it's time to call all me friends that "borrowed" tools from me like my engine hoist and engine stand

Yea Dan, small world.
Goddamn, who had this car before you? Those are some... interesting (read: expensive, somewhat rare) parts to toss on a car you sell because the tranny blows...

Let me guess... you got it from Kyle?
-judging by the JDM parts, the tranny failure, and your location.
