Is it true that FWD legacy axles are beefer than AWD front axles? You can use FWD half-shafts on a trubo legacy, right?

Hmm, good to know. I guess I know what I'll be replacing them with when I need a new axle.

I got FWD axles from cvaxles.com when I replaced my front ones. Then the boot split on the left one, so they sent me an AWD axle replacement. So right now, I have a AWD axle on the left front and a FWD axle on the right front

I will be changing that soon ;)

Is it jsu the shaft of the axles that's beefier, or everything? I don't think anyone on the bbs has axles as the weak point in their drivetrain. Thw fwd axles, if anything, would be more weight.

Is that even safe for your diffs? Wouldn't that be kinda similar to using one bigger tire, or more psi in just one tire?

I don't think it would make enough of a difference to matter.

It would be similar to using one steel wheel and one aluminum wheel but with the same size tire on both sides. The speeds are the same so it shouldn't hurt things... if anything he might just be subject to a slight tad of torque steer due to the asymmetry.

I'm not sure I follow, sure the steel wheel is heavier than the alum, but they're the same size. With a FWD/AWD combo wouldn't it be more like using one 185/70/14 tire and one 185/75/14 tire? Or one 14" alum wheel and one 15" alum wheel?

The axles are thicker but they're still constant velocity... The wheels will still rotate at the same rate.

I picked up FWD fronts from a 95 legacy for $10. They are said to have 55K miles on them. I wonder how back I will get ripped on shipping :?

Are those the ones from ebay? They don't fit our cars

yep, I was about to buy those aswell. The splines are on the axles you just bought instead of having the splines on the tranny (diff) like is on your tranny.

Oh..I thought that the guy just had the splines pulled out of the tranny and stuck in the axles:( Most people don't bother pulling out the roll pin, then just pry the stub out of the diff. I thought this was the case.

Interesting idea, would they just come out like that though?

With a pry bar. The stubs are pressed into the spiders. There is a locking type of washer/coller inside the diff that lock the stub in. You just need to pry the stub out. This is for the 4EAT, not sure if MTs are the same way. I have one 4EAT missing the stubs due to this.

I wonder if I can pry out the stub and use these axles? It would be less fun removed them in the future. I'm a fan of the roll pins for some stupid reason.

hmm, odd, I didn't know that. However, it woould seem easier to just punch the pin out. oh well, let us know what happens.

Honestly, i've never seen a tranny w/o the stubs. So it's very possible these are like what you describe.

Here are some crappy pics I just took of one of my 4EATs. Like I said, I always pull the pins so I have no idea if this will work. I bought the 95 Leg shafts so I might as well try it.

I got the axles today. It's what I thought, the stubs were still pinned in place. I pulled the pins and the stub came out. This should work fine.
