Is there a way to check the codes on an OBD II system without a scantool? My brother-in-law's 1996 OBS has the CEL on and he needs to fix this before selling it.

No, there isn't... He'll need to get someone with a scantool to read and/or clear the code. In many parts of the country, AutoZone and related stores offer code scanning as a complementary service, so that's probably the place to go.

actually there is diagnostic connectors on the obd2 models. Or at least some of the newer ones for sure......I have seen them referenced in some of the manuals for th newer ones.

How you interpret whatever output is beyond my knowledge though.

I believe they have the green test-mode connectors, yes. You can put the ECU in test mode to aid diagnosis, but you can't access trouble codes as far as I know.

Head to your nearest jiffy lube, if someone there knows howe to use the scanner you can get the code pulled for $9.99

I think AutoZone will do it for free.
