Hi guys,

I've been reading this forum for a few days now and have decided to join up. I'm really fascinated by the fact that Subaru released the Legacy in North America with an EJ22T.

Over here in Australia the Legacy is known as a Liberty but it only comes in NA EJ22 form and a sports model using an EJ20T. The EJ20T is essentially the precursor to the WRX EJ20T with the only difference being the intercooling is water-to-air and not air-to-air. Hydraulic lifters were also used in this version of the EJ20T. The EJ20T was dropped when the 2nd generation Legacy was released.

How different is the EJ22T to the NA EJ22? Is it a SOHC head or a DOHC head like the EJ20T? Does it use air-to-air intercooling? What is the power output of the EJ22T? Over in Oz the NA EJ22 is 100kw (not sure what HP that is!) and the EJ20T is 147kw. Does it come with a 3.90 diff or a 4.11 diff?

The North American Legacy Turbo is a very odd bird indeed. The EJ22T is very different from the N/A EJ22. Differences include a fully closed deck short-block, oil injectors to cool the bottom of the pistons, a completely different form of aluminum used, beefed crank bearings, forged connecting rods, and pressure cast pistons. Unfortunetly nobody knows what subaru was thinking for the north american market. Here, they built an engine capable of withstanding over 300 hp easy, but they didn't even give it an intercooler :o Yes north american Legacy turbos don't have an intercooler. They are also SOHC as opposed to the Liberty RS's DOHC EJ20T. Stock North american Legacy turbos make 160 hp and 181 ft/lbs of torque. Legacy turbos here came with a 3.9 rear diff, and 1991 models came with the viscous LSD in the rear.

Something i lerned yesterday :

as for the Ej22g, the early version 2.0l turbo (ej20G) as found in the Liberty RS was both Closed Deck + Oil Squirters equipped.

seems like this was the "way to go" from subaru until the revision in 1994 for 1995 models.
