How to pull out starter motor house

8) Hi everyone, i have a 93' legacy gt s/w, has been used for 3 years, everything is fine, just starter need to be replaced, the starter has two parts, one is the starter motor and other one is the house, starter motor bolt to the house, i can't figure out how to pull out the house, could anyone help me?, cheers.

The starter motor and housing are one unit. Well mine is anyway. You need to disconnect the thick and thin wires then remove the upper bolt and lower nut. Both are 12MM, I think. Be SURE to disconnect the + battery wire on the battery.

ARent you supposed to disconnect the - terminal. I'm sure it doesnt really matter just so long as the circut is broken, but isnt the - generally safer?

YES!

Disconnect the negative terminal first! Then disconnect the positive one.

When it comes to starters I take off both + and -. - is always last.

WRXdan - Why?

If you're using a steel wrench to loosen the positive terminal while the negative terminal is still hooked up, the whole car can be used to create a huge short circuit across the battery.

The negative terminal should always be the first one to disconnect and the last to reconnect.
