Oil cooler

I'm thinking about installing an oil cooler on my car to help with cooling on the engine. Thoughts or comments? It would be a really cheap mod since the old volkswagens and porsches we have laying around the house used them.

When my build-up time comes, I'm doing away with the stock oil/water cooler, and going with a Setrab oil cooler with a Canton Racing filter relocation kit and a CM Filters remote mount oil filter and oil thermostat. Of course, this will be once things like the AC disappear.

I figure that the reduced load on the cooling system is a good thing, as well as the increased oil capacity. The real task is figuring the routing on the lines, as well as mounting for the cooler. Just make sure that you use stainless braided lines, and quality fittings (Aeroquip, Earl's, Russel). Also, make sure to use an oilstat (oil thermostat), so that you aren't cooling the oil excessively, since too-cold oil is as bad if not worse than too-hot oil.

With a turbo, the typical way of installing a front-mount oil cooler would be a little weird. You usually install a sandwich adapter between the block and the oil filter, and run hoses from that adapter to the heat exchanger. The problem is that the turbo exhaust gets right in the way of the most direct path, so it would be a little hard to route hoses safely away from the exhaust and also safely away from road debris.

As vrg3 said the exhaust and the timing cover are in the way.
I tried to hook up my cm remote filter on my car while the engine was out and there is no easy (direct path) for the lines to go.
Also the timing cover sits so close to the filter that both the adapters I have wouldn't fit with out cuting the cover.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but it will take a bit of work and some money (sent over $250 on just the remote filter and all the lines and fittings.)

Good luck and let us know if you figure something out.

I got a 91 turbo eng with the oil/water cooler, which is almost the same design as the other ej20 oil cooler. If you use exhaust wrap on the exhaust piping close to the oil cooler line it will be protected enough from the heat.

I use a n/a radiator w/ this setup and i never had any heating problems, ever. But i recommend the high pressure rad cap.

I hope to swap in an oil cooler off a '91 SS as soon as I have to replace my water pump. That way I can just do a WRX pump and swap in the cooler. Hmmm, since I'm looking for a new motor maybe I'll get lucky and find a low mileage '91 EJ22T. That'd solve that problem. :)
