Thought I should share this to show what not to do.

So most of my help has gone back to school, my brother is in Russia, and my last resort (my dad) is busy. Well I get the itch to pull the motor by myself last night. Subies are easy to pull but having an extra set of hands helps. I pull the motor, clear the fender and back the engine hoist away from the car. Now is a good time to buzz off the exhaust parts and oil pan, right..wrong. I set the impact on the first crosspipe bolt. Rattaatata. POP!!! One of the chains on the hoist starts to come out. I guess the twist from me and the impact caused one of my anchor bolts to slip. I was one thread away from having my head crushed with a EJ22T. You never saw someone lower an engine so fast!!

Yes...I need to wait for help next time. Extra set of eyes and hands are needed.

I want dibs on your engine if you kill yourself in the rest of the process. lol, sounds like your accident prone. All joking aside, man be careful its easy to lose a hand or a finger or something like that.

yeah, i know how that went.. it helped to have an extra set of hands for my swap.. but i like how we can just clear all the hoses and lines, undo the exhaust and motor mounts, and then you're free to lift that engine outta there with those nice four-points on the heads (?)
but be careful... dangerous stuff, when its swinging in the air...

I used the jacking points they provided front and rear and always make sure the load is secure as soon as it starts to take the load. It always pays to make sure the chain links are locked in, slack taken, and no interferences when the chain goes taut. I even used the intake manifold to lift the engine. I've had no problems, though I don't recommend it - I just had only one hanging point as there were no accessories or mountings on the front. I swapped the engine by myself, but took my time with it. It definitely helps to have another set of hands or someone around to call EMS.

I broke one of my rules. Never let someone else attach the hoist to the engine lift points. My dad helped out last saturday. He mounted up the lift plate while I pulled the axles out. I didn't double check his work. On the rear left bolt he only thread the nut till the end of the bolt was flush with the nut. It must have backed out while I lifed the engine out.

...whereas if you dropped a transmission on your head you'd truely be a gearhead.
