Clicking axle while driving straight not corners

I'm almost positive the front drivers side axle has to be replaced. I've had many axles go in other cars and I know the sound all too well. The part that confuses me a little is that it doesn't really click around corners only a little bit when accelerating. I've found in the past that a bad axle will click more when it is wet out and this true for my subaru right now. I've checked the boots and they are not torn. There is a little grease/oil on the outer boot, not sure if it is grease or just oil that might have been spilled. I can't think of anything else it could be any comments would be appreciated. I'm a little bit sad right now, I've only had my subaru for 2 weeks now and haven't had it for 4 days now the mechanic hasn't found time to change the timing belt and the seals yet. How quickly you become attached.
Sorry forgot to add, it is most noticeable when accelerating, but, it can still be heard when driving at a constant speed mostly in the lower gears. The noise isn't very loud yet I think I still have time to figure out the problem.
