Okay, may seem like a retarded question. Then again, I CAN be a bit of a retard. . .

But my GF is restoring her 1991 Legacy wagon and she wants to get this bumper cover that's in great shape off another wagon in one of the parts yards to replce her badly-scratched one.

We tried to get just the cover off, but it seems the top row of screws that hold the cover to the bumper cannot be reached, as the threshold of the cargo area sits right over it. ????

Anyway, I would assume the entire bumper assembly must first be removed, hence my question. We couldn't figure out how to do it. I'm not as familiar with her car as she is, and she lives 80 miles away, at present. So I can't get a really good look underneath it.

Does anyone know of a site that has a GOOD exploded view of said bumper assembly? And if not, could anyone give me a few steps to locate the bolts required to remove the assembly?

Would be MUCH appreciated.

I havent looked at my 94 yet but I can tell you that on my 87 wagon it is a piece of cake. Just look inside the spare tire well close to the back hatch. you should see four big rubber grommets on the "frame" rails (2 on each side). Take these four bolts out and the whole bumber assembly slides out. Should be very similar on our gens.

yup the four grommets on the bottom of the trunk along the "rail" is where you'll find the bolts to remove the bumper. Also you'll find smaller bolts where the skin meets the exposed chassis (rear corner of the wheel well and back bottom corner of the quarter panel). There may be more along the sides of the quarter panel hidden behind the bumper that bolt to the quarter panel aswell IIRC. These all have to removed to separate the bumper from the car.

No wonder we couldn't figure it out! We kept looking UNDER the chassis for bolts. Well, better to learn from the experts and swallow one's pride than go on and never figure it out.

Did it yesterday, took me a while, and the help of someone with upper body strength , but we got the bolts loose, and the bumper slid off easily. Thank you all very much!
