Ran into a problem with trying to use the levelers...

I looked at the diagram for the electric levers a little closer today and the wiring that is there. It doesn't match the wiring diagram. There's 6 pins on the connectors to the motors, vs three on the diagram.

Any chance one of you guys in europe could try getting the wiring diagram for the 89-90 electric headlight levelers.

It's possible the one I have is for the US 92-94

i'll ask at service - if they can make me a copy...

thanks a bunch!!!

really appreciate it.

BTW, this is the diagram I currently have. I think it may be for the post face lifted lights.

:oops: i didn't make it today; tomorrow i leave to short ski hollidays - will be back on sunday/monday;

That's cool, just let me know when you do get it. I'd like to test out the motors before I try and wire them up.

hm - all i git is this:

I didn't find any levelers at all...

If it helps - i can check leveler wiring at friends Legacy2... take few pictures...

Yeah, if you don't mind checking the wiring, I'd greatly appreciate it. I really can't even use the levelers unless I get a diagram on how to wire them up, and I don't really want to wire up the switch and run wiring to the engine bay if I'm not going to be able to use the levelers.

Thanks

I've done a little homework, and found out that the sti levelers for the WRX are similar but not quite the same.

These two threads on scoobymods go into details how they work.

http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2416
http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=952

My switch has an illumination ref source, and a ground for that.

It then takes a 12v switched source and feeds that to the levelers via the switching knob.

The levelers have six inputs. One is 12v power lead (most likely source power for the motor), ground, and the four positioner inputs from the switch. The signal from these leads probably act more or less like the trigger leads for a relay.

I've taken a few pictures of the switch, connector, and labeled them.

If someone cares to verify my interpretation of the wiring setup, I'd appreciate it.

I plan on testing the leveler motors this weekend to verify exactly which pins are which. I'll take pictures and label them like I did these, and draw up a wiring diagram for others.

Vikash,

Mind looking over what I did, to make sure I read the circuit board correctly?

It looks like you have it right, Josh... It seems pretty simple.

I'm a little uncertain about the illumination part, though -- is it not the same as the rest of the dash, with an illumination switched +12v and a varying illumination "ground" side? It looks like the black and red/white wires just go to either side of the bulb, so it seems to me that it ought to be just like the rest of the dash illumination.

Yeah, that's what I was figuring too....The illumination looks to be setup exactly the same as the rest of the dash. I was going to get some t-taps and tie into the switches on the side of the steering column.

I started looking at the leveler motors. I had to pull one of the motors off because the clip was busted. Luckily I have a spare. I also found that one of the plastic gears used to adjust the lens left/right is cracked, but it shouldn't be a big issue.

You can just fill the crack with epoxy or something, right?

I'm not sure. The way it's setup is there's two bevel gears. The adjustment screw is pointing upwards and has a shaft that goes down into this plastic piece. The one bevel gear is in that housing, and is basically just squeezed onto the shaft. If I can remove the shaft and clean all the rust off, and epoxy the gear, it might work. If not, I'll just have to remove the plastic housing when I'm aiming the lights and turn the bevel gear on the light by hand.

Where's a good place to look for the levelers you've got, Josh?
I kinda want a pair, too! Can we use the same WRX/STi levelers that are here? I gotta have another project, and lighting seems like a worthwhile pursuit, along with the harness upgrades...

I pulled the shaft/bolt out of the plastic housing. It's rusted to hell. The gear has splines in it. If I clean everything up, and epoxy the gear, hopefully it'll hold up and the shaft/rod will stay in.

The lights have to come with the levelers already. There were EDM models that didn't have the electronic levelers. As for trying to find the lights......it's not exactly easy unfortunately.

I'm not sure if the leveler motor off the sti is different, more then likely it is....but without seeing one, I'd only be guessing.

Just an update on things.

I finally had some time to test the wiring on the motors between traveling nearly 4000 miles in the past week and being sick.

The wiring on the six pin leveler motors is exactly the same as the six pin leveler motors in the newer sti's, etc from overseas.

There's a write-up on scoobymods that I used to verify the pinouts.
http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2416

So I got the wiring taken care of now.

I pulled the motors off the lights because the ones on there had busted electrical clips, so I swapped motors with the spares I got. I also ran into an issue with some of the gears on the manual adjusters being stripped. One of the gears is cracked, but still seems to work, so I just left it.

The problem I've got now is getting the stupid leveler motors back into the light housing. The little metal ball does not want to pop back into the socket. I was working on this last night, but got frustrated and left it. I probably won't have time to mess with it until next weekend.....going out of town again for work this week.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to get the metal ball back into the housing, I'm all ears.

Also....if anyone has the chance to get a set of these, and has the option to get the ones with motors or without......get the ones without motors. You'll save yourself a lot of hassles.

After recently doing an engine swap the plugs on the lights and switch look awfully familiar to those used other places on the car. Ill try to figure out if thats the case.

Does anyone know of a source for these plugs on USDM cars?

For 92-94, the plugs are the same as 04-05 STI for sure.

But not sure about 06-on

did anyone figure out wiring for the motors. the pictures of the switch end helped a lot but would still like to see the motor plug end

I don't recall if I posted this somewhere else, but these diagrams will tell you what you need to know.
