with a few inches of snow this past week I found out(going up a hill from a stop) that only my front wheels are spining. when I reved it up, the rear wheels would BANG into motion just for a split second. And that happened all the way up the hill... with me reving and reving, the car banging forward....barely making it up the hill.

whats wrong with my car?? I'm thinking center dif?

the car is a 91 L wagon with 230,000 k on the clock

Automatic or manual?

Automatic, likely the duty-C solenoid or smoked center diff clutches. Manual, roasted VC center diff.

My 93 had a similar problem when it was still a 4EAT. You're going to be into the rear part of the trans for a few hundred bucks, at least. You're probably better off, with that many miles, to consider having the whole transmission rebuilt :(

...or swapped :)

so is the center dif part of the tranny?

there is no center diff on an automatic transmission. But the rear extension housing that has the rear clutch packs & duty c solenoid are part of the transmission.

interesting

woa cool...good info to know. So replacing my tranny will solve the problem, Thank god :) I'm glad I dont have to worry about BOTH.

BTW whats the final drive on a 91 L wagon?

will the 96-01 legacy trannys fit :?:

thanks for the info!

The 91 4EAT's had a 4.111 final drive ratio.

I'm not sure what the 96-01 tranny's had for a final drive ratio.

Assuming the final drive ratio's are the same, it should bolt up, but you're going to have issues with electronics/wiring, since the 96+ utilizes the phase 2 4EAT.

When my reverse went out we called around to a few places and found a tranny with 80k miles for I think about $700, and had a mechanic my dad knew install it. The transmission shop I went to quoted me like $2500 for a rebuilt transmission from Subaru.
