What would you rather have?

The touring wagon is not included because we all know it's the greatest thing evAr.
You can modify it as much as your current budget will allow, but you can't swap engine or drivetrain.
Car is to be used exactly how you use your subaru now.
I'm not going to buy a car or anything (actually, im gonna stop driving entirely in a month) I'm just generating some conversation.

I'ma get me a stock turbo, screw the fact that it's bolted to a 4EAT.

I'm going to wait on my vote until I have more information.
What are the limiting criteria? Does this pertain to a decision you're having to make? If so, how will the car be used?

Are mods allowed, or would you be forced to leave it strictly stock?

In addition to the other cars I have? Neither.

For the record though, tranny choice means nothing.

SS . . . I autocross my current car, and some minor power and suspension upgrades would be perfect for a SS to adequately compete.

Generating some conversation eh? You could always try to explain how an auto is better than a manual in certain situations, and how a manual is better than an auto in certain situations. Noone would listen though

Please, please, don't get people started on that. ^-^;;;

He said he wanted to generate some conversation. What better way? One of those arguements can go on for pages.

I know; discussing 4EAT vs MT goes on like radical conservatives and liberals locked in a room together with campaign posters pasted on the walls.

It's not really a mt vs. at thing, anyone who prefers an at is probably gonna go with the SS, yea, call me crazy. Most people prefer the mt though, so, is an mt better than a turbo?
Myself, i'd rather have the 5sp. More fun, better mpg (got 360miles on the current tank

) , and still good handling better suits my needs. I autox occasionally, and i don't think the n/a is a real detriment, having driven my car and then a stock wrx back to back.
If i had more money and i drove long distances regularly, auto SS plz.
I guess i was just wondering if i was the only one with this opinion.

Like I said before, I don't favor the auto over the manual. I actually like the manual. But make me choose between Turbo/Auto and NA/Manual and I'll take the turbo, thanks. Easier to mod turbo stuff on an engine that had a stock turbo system in the first place.
Holy crap, how the heck did you get 360 miles on one tank!? My gas mileage is nowhere near that... More like half that... wow.

4EAT turbo, no doubt about it. Autos are much better for turbo cars albeit way less fun.

I gotta go with the 4EAT SS. Once you go blow, all else is too slow.

Hard to say. On the one hand, I don't like automatics. On the other, I like power. If I can't swap engines, I guess I'd just go with the automatic SS and leave it stock, and build the current SS.

I'd build the N/A to about 200 hp or supercharge it like Douglas did. Only way I'd go with an auto was if it were a 3-speed with pushbutton OD.

If I had money I'd do the SS up and just build the 4eat to be more fun than a manual

high stall, full manual, hard shifts, etc
otherwise a N/A 5mt with a few engine mods and some nice suspension would do me fine.

N/A with 5MT, just like I have now, and doing just what I do with it now, a daily and no more. I don't care how much better the Turbo is mated to an AT, it's just not for me.
The only way I would have an auto is if I got extremely lazy and just wanted a nice car to relax in on the weekends or something, or I was going to drag race (which will never happen).

Well, I've had both cars at one time. The auto SS really blew a nut because it was an auto..duh. On the other hand the L was underpowered and the interior made me feel like I was sitting in seats that were made of doyliees. There is just to much "grandma" effect from the L or LS then there is from the SS, which is obviously more sporty. PLUS, I really enjoy having a car that not everyone and their grandma has.

You can do that to an NA?

I wanna know more. I'll host pages and stuff. Just tell me more.

Y'all are crazy, I love my automatic. It drives smooth and I don't have to shift constantly. I can't see how the 5mt is sooooo much better. If my auto tranny dies maybe I'll feel different but for now I like what I have.

If I had to choose between an auto turbo and a manual non-turbo, I think I'd have to choose based on the condition of the car.
I prefer sticks (partly because I just suck at driving automatics), but it's not that big a deal to convert in the big scheme of things.
And I prefer turbos (for fairly obvious reasons), but it'd be a fun project to turbocharge an NA.
So I'd pick the car with less rust, with the better maintenance history, the prettier paint job, etc.

5mt.
The turbo is a blast just for the acceleration and phenomenal things it makes the engine do.
But a huge part of the fun is still rowing the gears. I had an automatic in my '84 Olds Delta 88. That things was a blast to drive when you wanted to chill. But I only want an automatic on a car like that. Plus I wouldn't ever want to screw with fixing one on these Subarus.
