Hi all,

I just purchased my first Subaru, a 1991 Legacy L wagon with a 1993 2.2l motor. I paid $1800 for it and it runs great. Give me the basics on the vehicle, easy mods, where to get parts etc.

So far I love it, check it out!

Thanks - I'm sure Ill have lots of questions!

Welcome!

Looks like you've got quite a few miles, but that probably doesnt matter much.

They're pretty sturdy cars, the cv axles being the only semi-uncommon wear item. Make sure it is healthy (run it for a while and check out your plugs, wires, and whatnot) and replace as necessary. By then you'll also have a good idea of what the car is lacking. IMO, the best thing to do is to put in some good, basic suspension, take out the intake resonator in the fender if you want the noise, and run with it. There isn't all that much power to free up.

Enjoy!

Welcome! Scott is pretty right on. Not much power to be freed up with the N/A. A different muffler might bring out the boxer rumble though.

Even a rusted OEM muffler sounds nice (like I have) so I bet a decent aftermarket one would sound great. Most of the money I've spent on my car has been completely unnecessary. This thing would've been dirt cheap if I drove it like a normal person and just fixed what broke. Still cheaper than a new car.

Best mods are just keeping it running right. I recommend a K&N filter (for long term efficiency if not power gain) and Magnecor wires as the cheap ones tend not to last long in my experience. Frequent Italian tune ups will also keep it running quicker.

Welcome!

Snorkusectamy, K&N panel filter, Diamond coil, cat-back exhaust, light weight pulley's or flywheel, cat-back exhaust, lots of suspension bits, short throw shifter, and upgraded brakes.

All of these engine mods will still only net you maybe 20-30 chp but the suspension and brake mods will help the car handle a lot better and in turn be faster in the turns, ect...

Welcome to the board.

I'm one of the few with a NA and it's a FWD at that. Don't underestimate the NA though, there are a few true rally cars around here that are NA. I've also killed my fair share of other cars out on the roads, lost a few too of course but it's the fun that counts ;). There isn't a whole lot we can do for extra power as others have mentioned. My baby came with a Diamond and that's the only engine mod have for more power. Over spring break I might do the snorkusectumy but I kinda like the nice quiet exhuast, but then again.... I do have the AC system removed and the weight loss made a noticable difference in acceleration and even more noticable difference in handling and how she slides. I usually don't run with more than 1/2 tank of gas either because I can feel the weight of a full tank slowing me down (that and I'm a poor college student...) No one has mentioned seafoaming your engine yet so I will, seafoam it. Some have noticed a difference, others haven't, depends on how dirty the inside of the engine is to start with I feel. Personally I noticed that it pulls through the RPM range smoother after the seafoam and my idle definately dropped a couple hundred.

First thing I would suggest though is get yourself a good set of tires. I upgraded to turbo rims and run 205/60 and talk about a difference over the old 185/70/14's. A lot of people run wrx rims but personally I like my 15's because I have more tire sidewall and I probably use my Subaru as 4-wheeler up in the mountains more than some of the others here. Irregardless of your rim size, get decent rubber, all the suspension in the world won't do squat if you can't stick to the road :). There is a plethra of information on tires if you do a search and we're relatively nice people so feel free to ask all the questions you want and we'll either answer them or send you in the right direction. Drive safe and welcome again.

If you need any help or information on anything, dont hesitate to call, text, pm, IM or email me. I used to have a 91 AWD L wagon as well. Us washington legacy guys occasionally get together(and by occasionally I mean once), it'd be cool to meet you. Also, if you plan on doing any suspension mods to your wagon(you should, definitely), I have a very intimate knowledge of how the suspension goes together on the BFs. :)

Yeah. . . bring that ish up here if you need/want help with suspension work. We've got the tools, space, and experience.

That, and I've made it a habit lately to work on as many different cars as possible. I think I need professional help.

Jason is a good guy to do business with. Very calm and collected fellow, good people for sure.
Anyone else who'd like to do business with him, I recommend it, although I think I may have freaked him oot a bit about 'internet people'. ...but I'm just weird. They're not all like me, Jason.
Enjoy the lights and grille!
