Too bad it's not mine

My grandfather bought it about 5 hours ago, he needs a new vehicle for work, just for a few more months before he hangs it up for good. The truck in the background of the 2nd pic is such a POS I'm surprised it starts and runs everyday.

But yeah, he told me he was gonna go look at a 93 Subaru Legacy wagon and my ears perked up immediately. I went with him, we looked at it, I test-drove it and we plopped down $2k for it, signed the title and left in 20 minutes.

It only has 110k on it, the interior is in great shape and it drives pretty much perfectly. It's a 93 L AWD AT...

Crack in the windshield :


The thing under the lighter is an anti-theft device, if I pull the key thingie out of it it won't start or anything. The HU is horribly hooked-up, it has the whining with engine speed that is associated with a bad ground...


Unfortunately, the guy bumped into something with it and tried very unsuccessfully to fix it. I think I'm gonna do a JY run for a taillight Monday, as I know where there's a wagon locally...


It's still a nice car for the money though. It runs great, pulls hard when I get on it, no rust, original exhaust doesn't leak, COLD A/C ... I wonder who's actually gonna be driving it more, him or me

My advice to you.... leave that key "thingie" in there at all times. When I used to be an installer I would have people come in to our shop at least once a week to have it replaced. It was a good idea but not the best. The keys have a tendency to break.

My car had one of those so-called "anti-theft" keys on it when I got it. It's so dumb. It was installed with a bunch of Scotch-Loks on the ignition switch wires, so it actually made it easier to hotwire the car since it brought some of the wires out. I got rid of that the second day I had the car.

Is your grampa gonna have the windshield replaced? I don't think that usual windshield epoxy stuff can work on such a long crack.

You could try just adding a ground from the radio mounting bracket to the engine block to see if it resolves the hum. Or if there's a separate amplifier, connect a grounding strap between the radio and the amp.

I have one of those anti-theft things on my Tahoe. The thing is that I didn't know about it. I found it "breaking down" at an amusement park with my family. We went to leave at the end of the day and the car wouldn't start. I couldn't figure it out. The car had juice but nadda. I thought the starter went out. It got really cold that night and the park people just left us out in the parking lot. My babies started getting really cold and we couldn't get a tow truck or anything because it was a holiday weekend. I had to take my shirts off to wrap around my infant son. It was fucked up. All the Hotels were booked too. It was scary. Finally my brother in-law found a hotel about 30 miles away to give us a room and a guy from the hotel drove out to pick us up on his own time. The next day I pay for a taxi to take me 35 miles to a rent a car, go to the Tahoe to check it one last time before having it towed and low and behold, what's this little thing on the floor under the gas pedal? Some black chip looking thing. Found the spot it went into and bam! Car started right up. At the time I was too relieved to be pissed. It was fucked up.

On the other hand, Vikash, can I remove that thing without too much hassle? I noticed these things: the positive wire for the battery has been completely replaced with an extra thin wire that I'm almost positive goes to this little contraption, and it looks like there's one coming off the negative wire too...

My granpa will replace the windshield, I'm going to get in touch with a friend who I think can do it for a real good price. I found out, here in FL, you will get a free replacement windshield only if you have comprehensive insurance on the vehicle.

Matt - That's nuts! That must have really sucked with the kids... Good riddance though.

Michael - I don't know about yours, but I actually was able to just replace mine with a little male-to-male quick disconnect adapter.

I'm confused by what you're saying about the positive battery wire being replaced with a thin wire... there's still gotta be a fat wire going to the alternator and starter and stuff, right?

You should try following the wires leaving the little receptacle that the key fits into. WIth mine they just went over to the ignition switch. The starter wire had been cut and each side went over to the receptacle. Other wires had just been spliced into and also went over to the receptacle.

Make sure your friend can get good windshields. My dad didn't think to ask about the quality when he had his windshield replaced on his Audi, and now you can see nonuniform parts of the glass so things look slightly wavy through certain areas of the windshield. It's not a big deal, but it's dumb that the problem exists at all.

I worded my post completely wrong . The positive wire has been replaced with another thick wire going to the starter like it should, but there is another thin wire spliced into it that appears to go under the fuse box...

I just pulled some JY trim pieces for the interior, as the piece surrounding the auto shifter and the center console are both cracked. Too bad the JY car was rear-ended and the taillight was smashed And I bought some cheap-ass wheelcovers for it too...

I've got a right rear tail light with just slight cosmetic crazing where the two different colors of plastic come together, it seals and works fine and you wouldn't notice unless a foot or less away, in fact I didn't notice until I had the car for a few weeks

I just got a perfect one from a vendor so I don't really need this one, and I'll let it go cheap

Those wires might actually be for other things too. Maybe there's a security system or something under there? If you want to remove the key thingie I think you should just remove the trim panel above the driver's knees and look at what's happening at the ignition switch harness.

Chances are that Key thingie goes to a relay somewhere. (like most car alarms with starter kill)

If you do not want to try and remove it you can just glue it in there and be done with it.

It was a good idea...just not very well thought out.

My grandpa is already blaspheming. He said he's thinking of turning the new wagon around!

He said he's getting tired of shuffling 5 cars around between 2 people, which I can understand. But he's being so damned lazy about selling his shitbox truck. I told him tonight, plain and simple: "You are stupid to even consider selling the Legacy and keeping that truck. It's barely running."

Besides, I'm already getting attached to it I've done quite a bit for it already...
