New to the board: My introduction [semi-long]

Hey guys. I've searched the board over the past week but I just signed-up today. I'm stoked that I found a tech site like this because i'm a complete Subaru n00b. Anyway...
I just bought an Auto. Turbo 1993 Legacy GT from a friend of mine for $100. She has 215,000km on the clock, the body is in 'okay' shape and the interior is 'nice'. He just bought himself a new mini and just wanted to get rid of his car.
I just did an oil change, new air filter, and NGK V plugs [which i found out here are better then the bosch] and some other engine cleaning and the car runs like a new machine. I cant believe how smooth it runs. No hesitation or valve ticking at all.
However, the front CV Axels are going/gone and the front/back rotors and pads are toast. [he toed the car to my house]
Well to cut it short, my plan is to fix her up then do some small mods and maybe this puppy can fly stealth and beat some of the local rice.
Thats about it for now. I'll keep reading the archives.

Welcome, you'll find that there are a lot of guys here who really know what they're talking about when it comes to these cars and are pretty nice to boot.
Just to check, when you say towed you mean on a flatbed right?
As for the CV axles, I think the ones from a FWD legacy are supposed to be beefier than those of the AWD. As for the brakes I think there are plenty of turbo owners who can chime in on that and other mods.
Enjoy the car and again, welcome.

Welcome, thats a hell of a deal you got, and both axleas and brakes are easy fixes. Wait til you start modding, you're gonna love it.

You're exactly right, the FWD axles are noticeably thicker than the AWD ones.
Ray, go to
www.cvaxles.com for all your CV axle needs. When all is said and done, you will pay $55 for one of the best reman axles you can buy with a proven lifetime guarantee. Both my cars have both their front axles from them.

Definitely, if my harddrive hadn't blown up, I'd be able to show you the comparison photos from when i did mine last september.

Much obliged, I already feel welcomed.
Corsair, they used a dolly to toe it to my place. The CAA guy, my friend and I knew its an awd vehicle. But i've heard of some Audi/Scooby toeing horror stories. Quattros seem to blowup and get fragged when morons toe 'em wrong.
The problem is that i'm really strapped for cash, so i'm going to keep almost everything i do stock for the meantime. Once i replace/flush all of the fluids and know that she can the extra stress thats when i'm gonna start thinking about mods. And i'm probably going to go with rebuilt CV axels from a local shop.
Thanks to Legacy777 [way back in 2003] I just scored the manuals and service bulletins. i'm aready ahead by visiting here. Thanks again.

Even if you are strapped for cash, see if you can afford to upgrade to WRX brakes in the front particularly, you may find the cost of nearly-new parts off of nasioc.com will be competitive with a complete rebuild of what you have. If you get take-offs you may even get excellent pads with them, just strap it all on. The big bonus here is the new calipers you will get, who knows how good or bad the ones you have may be, depends on maintenance form the previous owners.

Hey guys.
I posted my story before about how I got the car…
http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic. ... hlight=ray
But I think I want to sell it. I think I’m better off keeping my golf. I thought I would try selling it here to an enthusiast before I tried Autotrader or the newspaper.
I had the car certified and emission checked. They passed both. Right now the car is ‘fit’ for the road but I didn’t plate it.
What I’ve done to the car:
I replaced both of the front CV Axels, the front tires (BFG precepts), front rotors and pads, new muffler, the passenger side valve cover gasket and grommets, air filter, sparkplugs, mobil 1 oil change and filter.
I’m not exactly sure what my cars worth, but I think $4,500CDN isn’t that outrageous. If I’m way out of the ball park tell me a more realistic price.
You can check some pics here.

The car is solid and runs strong. The only rusty spot is the one in the rear passenger side door that I took a pic of. That’s the largest rust spot on the car. Aside from that theres some paint chips and small dings, but the car is straight overall.
217,000km on the clock. I just bought it from the second owner (my friend) whos had it since 1999. I have the 1st owners dealership maintenance book and from 93-98 everything was done by the dealer on schedule. My bud workerd as a gas station and had all of his oil changes done there for cost.
You guys know the specs of the car better then I do so I wont bother posting them. If anyone’s interested gimmie a shout and we can chat.
Thanks for reading. Ray.
