turbo motor, rs tranny, possible?

Okay, here's the deal, it's a bit confusing, so i'll use names to confuse you more.
Craig has an 04 wrx wagon, and wants more power without modding then engine. His plan... v8 STi full drivetrain. That leaves his stock drivetrain in need of sale.
Kyle has a 2.5 rs that he'd like a bit more power in, and will be buying Craig's stock wrx drivetrain. That leaves HIS stock drivetrain in need of sale.
That's where I come in. My stock transmission is near it's end. It shifts slow and hard, and hey, it's an automatic, with nearly 170k miles on it. I'm ready for a new one, and would like to replace it while I'm still going to a cheap school. Kyle wants to sell me his transmission. I know that the clutch and stuff will not likely fit(i don't think), which will work out fine for me. He's offered me the clutch and everything else that I'll need from the wrx, because he wants performance parts.
So, i suppose here's my question. Will a RS transmission work with my engine, providing i use stock wrx components such as the clutch and flywheel?

you cant swap NA clutch stuff and turbo clutch stuff, due to the push-pull difference. if you got the RS tranny you would have to use the stock RS stuff or some aftermarket upgrade for an NA tranny to hold some more power. but the RS tranny will work with an appropriate cluch/flywheel. make sense?

What jake means to say is yes.
You'd have to use NA 2.5 clutch parts, but i think a 2.5 or wrx flywheel would work, though Matt will probably correct me on this if i'm wrong.
The only big issue then is your driveshaft/braces/rear differential, so if that's in the deal, you're pretty much set. Both myself and Josh have done this, Josh a bit more intricately, and you should reference our respective build writeups for info on the other misc bits and pieces needed.

I know of at least one person running around with the stock RS drivetrain, combined with a JDM WRX motor running around 20 psi, with no problems. There's several heavy duty clutches produced for the RS tranny.

You can not run the WRX flywheel with a push type clutch setup. They do not have the same diameter.
Actually the turbo legacy and the push type clutch setup use the same diameter flywheel. Whether the turbo legacy flywheel and the na flywheel is swapable....I'm not sure.
Anyway, yeah it'll work. You'll need the matching diff and MT driveline. I'm not sure if the newer model rear axles are different or not.....what year RS is it from?
All the other stuff is pretty standard. You'll probably want to go with the hydraulic clutch setup off any newer subie, pedal boxes will fit from the newer car as well.
As for the wiring....you'll pretty much want to do what I did to make everything work properly. You'll want to double check all the wiring though. The at/mt ident pin may be backwards for the turbo legacy ecu. Also for the cruise control, you can probably keep your AT cruise computer, and just the cruise clutch switch into the appropriate pin on the AT cruise relay.

I believe THAWA is using a 98 RS transmission.

Thawa has one and I'm running one on my legacy SS. So yes it will work. I ran mine without the hydraulic setup tho, it was way easier than having to buy the parts, pretty much all that was needed was to change the pivot point.
Mine has the exedy clutch and fidanza flywheel.

lol. hope you enjoy the 16G, you'll notice the 4.11 revs like crazy with the turbo engine and the big turbo.

I drove ryan's brother's car yesterday. Same rs trans. It felt eeriely like my car used to as an NA. He's got the hydraulic setup though. I can't wait to get the 16g in there

It's a '00 RS, btw.

Don't count on it
Seriously though, it's a lot easier to sell an SS or TW with a 5MT, swapped or not. 5MT TWs are still super-rare, and the demand is higher than the number that exist.

wait a minute, back up.
i can get rid of the hydroclutch and put in a 4.11 driveline in my car?
cool. i still want a 4.44. but that is for another day.
wonder how much i could sell my SS driveline for?
enough to buy a '00 RS driveline w/a rear LSD?
i dont plan on running much more that 10-12 pounds of boost and i dont race the car so im sure it would hold up just fine.
but since i dont race the car and my current tranny is fine there really isnt much of a point to doing all that on my car then is there.
crap! talked myself right out of a prefectly fun idea again. stupid priorities!

yes you can get rid of the hydraulic clutch
I dont know how much the drivetrain is worth
The 2.5RS tranny has held a 12.6 1/4 mile for a guy with an impreza here with over 80 runs and daily driving without problems.
My problem was i let the clutch out before it was all the way in gear one time and i broke the shift fork. But i finally got around to fixing that.

Yeah, the RS tranny is great. My brother is loving it, and Hardy seemed pretty excited about driving it. With that alone, his car is considerably faster than mine. He has a completely stock car, and I have the CES, and a failing wastegate I think.
We made one of the clutchlines from the a stock setup work for the hydraulic setup of the RS, but it was a stretch. Too much engine wobble would be bad I bet. Get a clutch line from an RS if you can.
The swap itself wasn't hard. We pulled the tranny out twice

You don't need to get rid of the hydro clutch..you ever try pulling the pedal assembly out....it's a super biatch....in fact I'd say keep since most of the newer trannies are hydro setup. You just need the appropriate slave cylinder for the push clutch setup.....you may also need the clutch master cylinder as well.

That's right, just get the push stlye slave cylinder and lines if you plan on using an rs drivetrain. Honestly though I'd look into a pull style 4.111 drivetrain if all you want is the gearing. There's 4.111's in almost every year overseas so finding one shouldn't be THAT hard.

That was what stopped me from a TW, was no 5MT. I'd probably buy one, but I'd want a built tranny, and my mods in it. That would be a nasty sounding wagon, tell you what.
