I just took my axle back off and laid it on the ground to compare to my "new" stock WRX so I could check for hanger locations and fitment.
The WRX pipe is smaller! WTF?

Are you sure it's a wrx axle-back?
I know my friend had a stock WRX axleback and it was 2.25" ID piping.
Yours could have come from an RS, and you thought it was for a WRX or whoever you bought it from SAID it was for a WRX. They had 2" piping.

ok, heres some pics.
thats the tleg muffler and on top the wrx axle back. The WRX pipe IS 2.25".......but it fits INSIDE off my pipe. My pips is bigger. Sooooo
keeping my pipe and just used the WRX muffler.
The wrx muffler has bigger outlets, their nice n shiny too and my muffler had a few holes rusting thru. the WRX muff is about 1" longer too.
I did not have to relocate any brackets but its not quite centered up right, a little heat vould fix that.
I think it looks ok, not sure it sounds any different altho when I 1st started it sounded pretty burbly but once it warmed up it quieted down. Sounds no diff in the cab. I'll have to do a drive by on my buddies to get feed back.

I don't think it flows any better. I'm going to open up the old muffler and look at the baffles. I may run a hole saw thru the wrx tail pipes and cut holes in baffles.
