ej20g timing belt install help

So I've decided to do the timing belt on my ej20t and just want to confirm I'm doing everything right.
BeforeI took the belt off, the turbo side cams both exhaust and intake were not really lining up, they looked off by about a tooth.
Here is what I did, If i've made any mistakes, please correct me before I start her up.
1. took the plug out of cyl. #1 and put a compression guage in their.
2. turned the crank via the front crank bolt until I started to get compression on the guage, then lined up the marks on the crank with the block.
3. took off the idler pulley
4. took off the tensioner(at which point **** hit the fan and both intake cams moved because of the tension taken off the pulley)
5. Using the manual, I rotated the cams back to where they should be, making sure to only turn them the way the book indicated.
6. So here is where I'm at right now, the turbo side exhaust and intake cams cyln 1,3 have no pressure on them, as in they are not pushing any valves down, but the other side, ie. cyl #2,4 cams are under pressure, as in they are pushing down valves.
Is this correct?
Also, what timing belt should I use. will a wrx work?
Thanks for any tips I may have missed.

It should be the same as all 4 cam subaru engine. YOu could use the WRX one and I belive you better buy it from dealer since it won't have a lot cheaper from aftermarket.

Ahh not true my friend, dealer is $285new and aftermarket is $56 as long as they are ok, then i'm going to go ahead with this.

Are you sure you're not looking at the STi timing belt? A WRX belt is like 130 from the dealer, and just under 100 from subaruparts.

Are the marks lined up still for 2 and 4? If so you're fine, just rotate them one at a time until you unload the cams. I do believe in both DOHC and SOHC when the right side is unloaded the left is loaded, and vice versa.

For everyones info the correct belt for a ej20g is a Gates t277. The same belt as a 98 2.5 RS.
