Who's Done a Heater Core?

I'm at the track with instructor in car. Car is throwing slight mist on first lap... I notice but ignore. Second lap coolant smoke is rising from the passenger floor carpet and dash, looks like a friggin rave (sorry, Josh  ). It did look really cool but bad nonetheless. I pull off the track find a screwdriver and razor blade and cut the heater core out of the loop. Go out and race the rest of the day with the car fine and dandy with the reduced coolant capacity.

How hard is it to do the heater core in these cars? I know it's a pain in the butt in general. But I'm not going to have to rip out the entire stinkin dash am I? Oh, and if anyone has spare heater cores lying around, that would be great. I want to do it myself to save a $1000 and it's starting to get really cold in the mornings here...

I'm not sure how bad it is in a legacy but I can tell you its pretty hard to do in a GL. I did not remove the whole dash but I did unscrew the dash and had a friend pull on it. From what I can recall, the core itself was in a huge plastic box (that has all the valves and stuff) and that was the tough thing to take out. I think the proper way to do it is to lower the steering column and remove the whole dash.

Good luck none the less.

Yeah, you pretty much have to pull the whole dash and then pull out the heater box, disassemble it and remove the heater core. I'm not sure if it can be done without pulling the AC box first. It is in a seperate box but i'v never tried to just remove the heater core with out pulling the AC box to. I'v only pulled them out of parts cars. They are a pain in the ass but no worse than a Taurus or a Mustang, or a Caravan, or a Dodge P.U., or.....well I'v done alot of other heater cores but i'v never seen one in any Suby fail. I don't know what year your car is but I have a Heater core out of a 92 wagon. $50 and you pay shipping it's all yours, i'll even send it still in the heater box if you want but it would probly cost more to ship.

Did you whip out the glowsticks & flashing LED's ;)

As for your problem......as mentioned, it's goin to be a pain to get out, and you'll probably need to take the A/C box out first......
