Some random engine comments/questions

As I took apart the block today, I noticed a few things I thought were odd.
There are two oil passages on one side of the block. They have o-rings, but basically dead end into the other block half. I'm not really sure why they did this....other then the fact that was the only way they could drill it to get the passages where they wanted on the other side. Here's some pics of what I'm talking about.
It's the two o-rings in the bottom left

You can see where they mate up on the other side of the block

There's a ball bearing looking thing in the oil separator area. The only thing I could think of is that it's relief valve of some sorts.

I noticed something similar on the crank too. It seems to be tied into the oil feed for the rod bearings. You can kind of see the hole on the crank webbing in this pic

Just a general rebuild comment/tip. The rods have specific lettering on them as well as the caps. Write this info down on a piece of paper and relate it to their position on the crank before you remove them so you can reinstall in the same position.

Also, the rods have a subaru emblem thingy on one side. This side faces towards the front of the engine, or at least it did on my motor.
