Just went on a 1500 mile trip (750 each way)
First off, my speedo is out. the car ran like crap the first 750 there. It would miss/hesitate/bog whenever accelerating. It has alway been like this since I bought it, but I have never taken it on any highway trips-it is just my "get around town car", being it was a 300 dollar car. I have already previously switched trannys. When I got home to my parents, the car was dry underneath for about an hour, then all of a sudden there is a huge puddle of ATF. After arriving at the destination, my dad (40 years as a mechanic) looked everything over. He found the ATF leak-it was a leak around the tranny dipstick where it mounts to the tranny. New O-ring and now no leaks. For the bogging/miss/hesitation, we checked the check enging code (I new it was going to give a code 33 speed sensor due to the speedo out)
It gave 3 codes-nock sensor and mass air flow sensorMAFS, plus the speed sensor)
So, we re-repaired the splice on my nock sensor wire. And then my dad looked at the MAFS and it looked clean, but when he took out a alcohol wipe pad, it definitely had dirt. After cleaning it, we started up the engine, and WOW WOW WOW, it ran like it was new. It would rev to read-line no problem. I was smiling, so decided to give it a test drive-and i could spin all four wheels on take off. So, now my car is awesome again. I got 25 miles per gallon the first leg of the trip, and it would hardly run above 70-mph without cutting out. On the return leg, I got about 29mpg (also increased tire pressure)and it ran without missing a beat. I could keep up with ANYTHING on the highway. Without a speedo, i am lucky no tickets are in my pocket. I am running a K&N and attribute part of the dirt on the MAFS to the oil coming off it when the filter was new. But the car had the problem even before I put in the K&N. Anybody wanna race now?

You think 25pmg hwy is bad? My touring wagon never got above 22mpg, but I did have a turbo-back on it.

If you want a good used knock sensor, you know where to find me...

Buy this part, that will more then likely fix your speedo problem.

The inner shaft sheers off, and the cable going to the speedo doesn't spin. It's located on the passenger side of the front diff, near the diff dip stick.

better gas mileage than ever anticipated

I was very happy with the 25, cause I thought I would maybe get around 18. But the 29 on the way back, even with AC running, awesome. Guess my car is in damn good shape engine wise. It didn't burn a drop of oil either.

NOPE.
it is the gear INSIDE the replacement tranny. When the speedo end is unscrewed out of the tranny, you can put a screwdriver on the slot, jack up all 4 wheels, put car in gear, and the piece inside the tranny is stripped. Pisses me off. It is a 7 dollar gear, but have to take the tranny apart to get to. My dad was even surprised the gear cannot be pulled out of the top of the tranny. He tried to pull it up with a long needle nose, and it will pull up about 1/3 inch.
I don't have that kind of money to pay someone to fix it, and as of now that is really the only thing wrong with my 94 turbo wagon, other than a bad shock on the passenger rear. Pisses me off cause my speedo worked fine (and cruise control) with my old tranny. Is there anyone here in Colorado that can help me replace the gears cheaply? I can pay with beer, whatever else.
