I have never had the plastic cover off the top of my engine and don't want to break something removing it. My manual says nothing but "remove cover." How is it done?

Very, very carefully, Danielson.
ie, just pull it off.

pull it off...lol...there's a couple posts where it attaches... grab close to those and pull. Sometimes you have to pull hard, but it does com off.

There are four "buttons" on the piece, and I assume that those are mounting points. I tried lifting gently around those but figured I had better ask before I did something stupid. Again.

It depends on how brittle the plastic has become, there may be no way around breaking it. Mine broke snapping it back on the one time and I haven't ran with the cover on for about 4 years now.

Try sticking your hand under the cover and pushing up on the four buttons. Be careful not to lose the rubber pieces that hold the cover on the metal brackets. They rip easily too, so watch out.

It can help to run the engine for a while first; the heat softens the polymers a little.

When you get it off you can get a new set of the grommets--
then r&r becomes easier.
