there is some sort of intake system above the head lights if that's what you're talking about.

That picture is a negative. Everything white turns to black on the neg. The edge of the fender has a reflection of the sun, resulting in a dark spot on neg. Look at them side by side, and you should be able to see that the hood is not "open". Why does it matter, anyway?

just look closely at the original image. no air gap.

Why are we wondering about a gap in the hood? That car is getting the crap beat out of it. I bet it holds up better than most of the cars in that same race.
(please don't tell me he crashed it moments later)
