The WRX is a better built and stronger car no doubt. Better handling in all conditions, able to take a hit both suspension-wise and collision. Nissans clip a crumpled cigarette butt and need to be realigned. Torque steer. Insurance is probably about even. Resale will likely be higher on the WRX. I'm sure steering feel is much better judging by all the past recent Nissans I've driven. Much cheaper and easier to fix the Subaru. I used to be a Nissan fan, but then they changed their name from Datsun. Even then, my 83/4 GLs were far more fun than my two Zs.
I have a brand new Mazda3 (Volvo S40 'safetified' platform) and my 1990 Legacy felt more long-term durable when I bought that at 108k. Looking at cutaways of the safety cage, the Subaru seems much stronger. Nissans are traditionally not very good in a crash either, but I haven't seen any cutaways or ratings (though they don't 100% reflect real-life crash survival). If safety's a concern I could go on more about real-life stories about Subarus.

Get him to drive a 2005 5MT Legacy GT...he won't want the Nissan after that. (Unless the WRX is STi..I wouldn't buy it)

He had the Altima before (2002 model) but it got flipped in a car accident.
So he's got a cheque from the insurance company and wants to just get a new Altima.
The last Subaru he drove was a 91 Legacy L, and he loved it.

Has anybody ever heard of a Nissan Altima Rally Car? End of discussion.

I wouldn't want to place a large bet that a stock WRX could beat a stock Altima SE-R around a track... it would be close, and WRX's are not known for posting good times on the tarmac stock, although the bad stock tires hold them back a lot.
how about an Infinity G35 ? Same sweet motor, rear wheel drive, more than the WRX can handle road or track, and lots of performance goodies.

G35? we are talking 10k more than either a wrx or an altima...

G35 with the VQ45 V8. They make turbo set-ups for those now. (mainstream)
There are bi-turbo kits kicking around (skyline GT-R)

If your dad isn't too hard of a driver, and likes a day-day performance car, I can understand his lust for a wrx.
What's his main priority of the car?
Does he want looks/style?
Does he actually want an awd car?
What's his budget?
See, the altima is a rather refined car, and much bigger than the wrx. It has far more looks, style, and class than a wrx. While I think (personally) that the bug eye wrx is sexy, many people don't don't feel the same, especially in comparison to the altima.
I think if you told us what he wants out of a car, we could better tailor our responses and ideas to you.
. . . . But in the end, you know its really down to which one is cheapest.

My dad drives fairly hard, but he doesnt ever go over 100mph, and he rarely approaches it.
He likes to corner, and we live out in the boonies.
I dont like the Altimas because they are friggen everywhere. So passe.

What?
You mean VQ35, V6, right?
The G35 is not available with the VQ45... otherwise it would be known as the G45....
The G35 and it's Nissan brother the 350Z both have the VQ35 V6. APS makes a twin turbo kit for it, that makes ridiculous power.
We worked on one in the shop, replaced the wastegate actuators. At 14psi it made something stupid like 480whp on pump gas before we replaced the wastegate actuators.
Altima SE-R is kind of a nice car. The 06 WRX is significantly better in every respect, though. From aftermarket if he desires to mod (mildly or wildly), to quality of drive, to overall fun in 4 seasons. The SE-R is sexy, but really limited by FWD and relatively limited towards the aftermarket. The brakes are OK, but not great and if it weren't for the sticky stock tires it'd be a wash in the braking department.
Plus, for the money, it's entry fee to the STi, which demolishes the Nissan on every front, except for winter abuse, where the SO3's might edge out the RE070's.
The 06 WRX is cheaper, and better in every situation. Hell, even interior wise, the 06 WRX Limited (with leather and sunroof) edges out the Altima in luxury. The Nissan has far to many quirks of the interior to make it interesting to me. I just wouldn't be able to justify buying a Nissan other than the 350Z.
I would, personally, buy a SE-R if I needed a family car with a back seat that doesn't push the knees of the rearward passengers into their testicles. But on every other front, the WRX seems more versatile to me. Espically because you could get all of the fun of a WRX... in a wagon.

It's not really gonna be a family car.
The family has grown up
I'm the only one left at home, and I have my own car.

WRX WRX WRX!
the new 2.5L WRX is supposed to be awesome, and I heard the TR's seats are super nice!
Tell him to check out the TR, its supposed to be the best buy for not a whole lot of money.
And much more torquey than the old Rex's
