EJ22t, Phase I DOHC, EM?

I am thinking about purchasing a Turbo Wagon that has a bad rod knock.
When I rebuild it, I was thinking about putting a set of DOHC heads on it. (I already have the heads)
My question is:
If I use the thin head gasket. it should put the CR at about stock, right?
Can the stock ECU run this setup?
Cost is a factor.
Also, whats the cheapest I could rebuild that engine?

yes, the thin gasket will give you stock c/r stock ecu? Probably possible if you make a hybrid harness from the two harnesses. maybe better off with a 2.5 ecu and some mangement. Cheapest way to rebuild a motor is to have a connection to someone who gets parts at cost

I have heard that the thin head gaskets may cause the valves to hit. can anybody confirm this?

If you have rod knock, you need to crack the block and do the bearings. Suddenly it gets ALOT more exspensive and time consuming. Not that you shouldnt do it.
But.......
If you go that far you need to....
New rings $75
New gasket set $165
New bearings $100-$200 (?)
Rebuild your heads (don't think, DO!) $175
have block cleaned and checked $100
New water pump $?
New timing belt
New front and rear main seals
Misc $100

it will work. you just have to get the correct ends to you spark wires.
my friend noah is running a setup similar to this. doch heads on a 22t bottom end with a ss ecu and 440 injectors, no em.. lots of fireballs

azn2nr,
Noah is using the EJ20G heads, which have a significantly larger piston dish. Also, he's using an Ej257 block, not an Ej22T. But his bastard of a build does show that you can do this on a stock ECU. He also runs a reversed manifold and FMIC.
Nappy,
I don't know anyone who has ever used the thin Ej22 head gasket on a hybrid. They have either used the Ej22T gasket or the phase I Ej25 gasket, which is thicker than the phase II Ej22 gasket, but thinner than the EJ22t one.
And personally, since your LegacyGT was running fine when you did the RS-RA swap, I would just throw the heads in there as is. Don't worry about a rebuild. But I would go in and clean and bleed the HLA's on them.
What are you gonna do for the turbo? Vf-11? Or is this the impetus to replace the VF-8 on the RS-RA and use it on the hybrid wagon???

Why a thin head gasket on an application meant for boost?
If at some point he decides to up his boost, why would he want a stock, or higher than stock cr?

Right now Im trying to decide if any of this is feasible.
If I buy the wagon the cost of the engine rebuild will take my money. So if I cant run the hybrid with the stock ecu, I would probobly not swap the heads.
But if I can, it opens up a lot of possibilities down the road.
As for the Turbo, that would be down the road as well.
Matt, I have an Outback. I know its not as "cool" to most people but I like it.
Back to the CR issue. If I run the thicker HG, how would it run with the factory ecu?

when did he go to a 257 block, last i spoke to him about his car the block was still 22t and the only thing that had changed was he put in a forester 5spd.
but otherwise its still running 20g heads, adn nappy didnt spesify as far as i can tell which heads he was using.

So no one has done the combo highlighted in Yellow?

I find that hard to believe.

I could not find find anything in the FSM about how to do this. In fact I found no mention of it even having HLAs. All they say to do is check the diameter of the buckets. These are shim over bucket heads.
