4eat pump replacement

I did some searching but found nothing. Well I was out at GM this past week and had a chance to speak with one of their technical transmission specialists and although a GM tranny is nothing like a subaru one I though I'd tell the guy what kind of sound it was making and see what he thought. The sound is wierd. Its RPM based and sounds like a whine but with a slight grinding sound to it. it does it in park or neutral or any gear. you can hear the frequency change when going from park to reverse or neutral to drive or whatever but I think its just due to the engine rpm changing. It seems that its related to the TC so I figure its the pump. Also, it is definately louder when the engine cold. its weird. if the car is warm and I start it it will be quiet, then when I shift into reverse the sound comes right back. So, the GM guy though it was the pump also. I'm looking for the FSM breakdown of where the pump is, and if anyone knows if its easy to replace.

Thanks,

Mike

Yeah...sort of sounds like the pump. The pump is in the transmission and connected to the input shaft. Not really an easy task just to change it.

You'd really be better off finding another transmission or rebuilding that one completely.

What is the best sourse to find a 4eat from an ss? Do you know what else would work in there?

Not sure about sourcing a 4eat from a SS. However the 4EAT from a 92-94 legacy will work. It has a 3.90 final drive ratio.

well I think that the extra power the engine is making "helped" make the tranny go faster. Although, the tranny has 129k miles on it at the moment.
