Rear speaker wiring

I recently replaced the stereo in my 93 legacy wagon. It already had upgraded front speakers. I noticed yesterday that the rear speakers were shot. So, I went to the local stereo shop and bought a nice new pair of rear speakers. Two things I noticed:
1) They don't fit. there is something in the right rear speaker mount that gets in the way. Its an odd shaped metal thingy....
2) When the new speakers are hooked up, they sound the same, like they're shot. So.... I'm thinking theres a bad ground somewhere or the wiring between the deck and the speakers is shot. The right rear has a little sound that is totally horrible, and the left rear has zero, zilch, nada.
Any Ideas to solve the wiring issue? Am I really going to have to string new wires all the way from my deck to the speakers?
