What about EJ18 heads on EJ22E block?

Wouldn't that get the CR up and make more hp?

It's been done, but it's a worthless change. You up your CR and drop your airflow significantly. Better to change your bottom end to an Ej25 bottom end. More discplacement and more compression...

Thanks for the response. I would love to have a 25 block, but what I have is a spare EJ18 paperweight. I mean, who could possibly want one? I think my heads are a little tired anyway in my 22. Is it possible to address the flow probs while the heads are off the car?

sell the ej18 to cover some costs of the ej25 block. if it is in good shape, people will want it for a stock replacement motor rather than rebuilding. try asking some subaru shops, maybe you could even work a trade. if its in bad shape well, like you said its going to be harder to unload.
if you just wanted to save money by putting the ej18 heads on, go ahead. itll just make you run premium gas. not worth it for the effort involved imo.

Take the roller rocker assys and the cams and put them in the 2.2 heads. You won't get much for a 1.8 longblock. Most people swap the 1.8 with a 2.2 if there 1.8 fails and that is why subaru shops don't usually take them. We haven't had a 1.8 move through the shop for like two years compared to a couple 2.2s a week. You could port and polish the 1.8 heads to flow as or better than the 2.2, the 1.8s use the same IN1 intake valve that the 2.2 turbo uses, and i will check about the exhaust valves today. then you would have a decent flowing head with a higher CR. Thats a lot of work though.

Exhaust valves are different, so they are probably smaller.

If you weren't so far away, I'd buy that EJ18 'paperweight' from you...

They are both smaller, and I don't think you could port the Ej18 out beyond what the Ej22 already is. Those Ej18 ports are teeny.
But I do like the idea of the Ej18 cams and roller rockers. I wanted to do it on the last Ej25/Ej22 hybrid I built, but the buyer wasn't into it. The Ej18 cams have a few degrees more duration than the Ej22's and should be good for a little more power...

cast aluminum is about $.30 per lb right now at my local scrap yard and you have about 150 lbs of it so that's always an easy option but keep the cool stuff like the intake manifold and fuel rails, cams, bolts, valve covers.
So are the rockers different on the ej18 head? and does anybody have the duration and lift specs for ej18 cams? i might try putting them into my ej22t as an experiment.
