Oil pump removal--drain oil?

Hayne's manual says to drain the oil from the crankcase before removing the oil pump. Is this necessary? This coming weekend I will be replacing my leaking water pump and a list of other parts while I am in there. Including checking the oil pump backing plate fasteners and replacing its o-ring. Don't want to drain the oil, unless it will make a big mess when removing the oil pump, because I will have the oil changed when the job is complete. Searched oil pump removal and got lots of good info, but nothing said about draining the oil.

No need... You'll get some pour out, but most of it will be in the pan below the level of the pump.

why not just drain the oil and do the change as part of the procedure?

I used to change my oil at home, but it got to be a hassle to get rid of the used oil.
