Should running 10psi on an otherwise stock stock car result in a pounded rod bearing or wrist pin when hitting the rev limiter?
Or was I getting over zelous?

No, I wouldn't think it should. I hit about 10 psi this saturday night when it was "cold" and doing about 120 down the tollroad.

oops....I spaced....didn't see the 6500 rpm thing until after I posted.

Still....I don't think you should be getting any abnormal noises.

Well I wouldn't thing so either. I have been running 10psi for awile with no issues at all but I was doing some donuts last night and hitting the rev limiter a bit and it started knocking, I' pretty sure it's a rod bearing or wrist pin but it's definitly not good. :?

how many miles? beating on it like that could just be the straw to break the camels back so to speak.

I really don't know exacty what the motor had for mileage, but it was a really strong runner before it went. No smoke or nothing.

I'm running up to 15 psi on my TD04 (intercooled) on my 170,000 mile stock engine, and I've bounced off the rev limiter many times. No noticable problems so far.........

I ran 19psi for a while with my old turbo, and bounced off limiter a lot...never a problem

btw...190k miles

Well thats the great thing about these motors, mileage doesn't seem to really matter.

Perhaps some other factors were at fault here? It was acting a little funny earlier that night, I wrote it off as the wires or something being covered in snow. Well by the time I get it back together I should have my EGT and FP gauges hooked up. Then again I will also have my turbo and FMIC set up :-D

could it have been the exhaust hitting the car or a bad engine/trans mount that is jarred when it hits rev limiter, or just wastegate flutter?

Oh it's definitlly blowing up, I'm just thinking of why it happened. Maybe a dying fuel pump or something? Judging from others expiriances I shouldn't have blown it up. :?

Whoa. That sucks. I've never bounced off the rev limiter, I know what the dyno graph looks like for our engines (above 5500 RPM is pretty useless with stock heads)... but I have run 15-16 PSI daily with my hybrid t-bird/vf11 turbo and even before the fuel pump upgrade there was no audible knock...

well you know whats funny, i found out that our stock fuel pump puts out more gph than a stock STi pump...if i remember right ours is like 180 and the STi is 160!

and I've always wondered why people did fuel pump upgrades. our stock pump is designed to flow enough to give the engine plenty of fuel at quite a ways beyond stock power levels.

it's the rails and injectors that will become inadequate.

I upgraded mine becuase my stocker died, and the Walbro is cheaper than the stock replacement.

I don't think I've ever seen a Legacy fuel pump die, even with 300k on them. I think it may have just been the fact that the motor sat around for 5 years in various locations before I stuck it in my car. Who knows what kinda abuse it may have seen before I got it. But it was a very quite and strong motor before. :?
