--edit--I put this here because I thought it was a problem with my stereo but after tinkering I think I have some loose connection somewhere
ok so with life canceled due to 1/2" of ice on everything I decided to tackle my iffy FM modulator that I installed over the summer after rewiring it I thought I'd have my problem fixed...
the problem being last night as I was driving around I noticed my stereo actually strobing on and off, so I managed to turn it off when it stayed on for long enough, then as I exited my car I noticed my dome light flickered on and off but not consistantly and they eventully stayed off
I think I have a loose ground or some wire fubar-d, where should I check?

I'm stumped. need more info. is is a factory radio or aftermarket for starters. also list some other stangeness that might be happening.

ok yeah the radio is aftermarket, it's been in for over a year, wiring for the radio looks OK, it wasn't a problem in the past, I took it out to check and nothing was
currently the radio when turned on will shut off every few minutes or will even start rapidly turning off and on (the screen looks like a strobe light)
my interior dome and map lights occasionally turn on but say if a door is open and the dome light is on and then I turn on a map light it'll either flicker and die or just turn off
sometimes if the door is open the dome light will gradually dim and turn off
the problem does not seem to be dependant on the status of the ignition or whether the car is running or not

sounds like something is wored wrong on the radio. did you use a plug or did you cut the plugs off and wire it like that. A common mistake when cutting plugs off and using a multimeter (or a test light god forbid) is that when looking for a ground people attatch the ground from the radio to the illumination wire because it "rests" at ground. check into that.

illumination wire is terminated as the radio doesn't have provisions for illumination, I could probably unplug the radio from the factory harness and still have the problem...

Alternator could be going bad. I'd check the alternator output if I were you.
I'll move this to Electricfal.

thanks for the move, Phil
I don't think alt, all the other lights are working fine, head lights and such as well, problem happens when the car is just on battery and just the dome light circuit, which is always on... I guess I need to figure out how to check that

yeah apparently according to W&L it was a door switch...?
I wonder if it's really fixed, I was driving my Dad's car around today but I'm going to try to find out.
