Stubborn trouble codes?

What is up with this freaking car?

I cleared the ECU yesterday by pulling the EGI/AT unit fuse. I had to go pick up food, and just jumped in and left. I didn't notice until I got to the place that I had left the fuse out. Is it supposed to run fine without that fuse?

I thought this was weird, so I unhooked the battery for a night and pressed the brake pedal a few times. I hook it back up this morning, and everything seems to be normal. It doesn't seem to do its normal idle thing (start idling high and slowly drop the revs until it finds its normal idle). I just pulled the codes this evening and it has all the exact same codes it had before I tried to clear it.

Is this normal? I'm gonna try the official Subaru way tomorrow after my exam.

The fuse under the dash is just for the ECU's backup memory power supply. Main power comes from elsewhere.

Unhooking the battery and pressing the brake pedal apparently resets the ECU's operating parameters (IAC duty cycles, fuel trims, timing corrections) but not necessarily the trouble codes. Or at least not as reliably.

Disconnecting the battery and/or pulling the fuse hasn't ever worked for me.
The only way I've ever been able to clear my codes was to drive it down the road for a minute with the green AND the black connectors both connected. (Described in detail here.)

That seems to have done the trick.

I plug in to check the codes and voila! Just the 'All Clear' blinking.
