Well This weekend has been a 50/50 weekend for me...
See PA is GRRREAT for back roads and logging trails...And about 20 min from
my house and i have a great course I've planned out and run several times..
it's comprized of aspault, hard gravel, and dirt.. and its roughly about 6-7
miles long plenty of turns and cliffside bends, down hill bends, and single
lane roads winding thru PA mountains.. it helps me and my Co-pilot/Navigator
Practice for when the project car is ready...
Well we're haveing a blast.. makeing all our segment time or breaking our
old runs..
pulling 50-80 MPH at any given time.. useing everything the car gots.. hand
brakeing on 90 degree turns... really running my station wagon to it's
limits...
We had a blast.. my Co-pilot got better at distanceing my turns for me.. and
giveing me a count down for the turns.. no " TURN HERE!!!" anymore..
Heres the bad news.... as I rolled to the finish and we got out to calm our
nerves at let ourselves calm down...I smelled something awfull at first i was
really worryed it was the tranny burning.. but upon closer inspection.... I
noticed my brakes GLOWING RED thru the gold alloy rims.. infact i had slaged
my front right disc and locked that wheel.. and warped ALL the rest so after
2 hours of trying to remove the right rim from the car, we finally got it off
and proceeded to remove the right brake caliper complely and tieing off the
brake line. the pads firmly welded to the disc..
We put the tire back on and after it cooled and woobled home.. at about
45MPH the shakeing became unbearable at higher speeds.. so i got it home and
removed all four tires/ and discs.. so right now my car is on bricks awaiting
new rotors to come in.. I didn't go to the dealership they were chargeing 50
bucks more than the NAPA was for the same genuine subaru part...
Well I will post pictures as soon as i get them developed and scanned in.
plans for my next set of disks are to cross drill them with my drill press..
hopefully i will not have the warping problem again..

d00d! That ROCKS!! But that sux!!! I think you know what I mean...um,
yhea.

I've read somewhere about cross drilling the Soob roters is a touchy
issue. I'll have to track it down for ya. But in the mean time have
you looked into how much more some 4 pots w/ better spaced, slotted,
drilled roters would cost ya? Might be worth it...
I'm sad for your Soob. But I'm happy you had a great drive. But I'm
sad you have to work on the Soob.... ;o)

David,
Don't cross-drill those rotors. I had a set of cross-drilled I bought that
were brembro's. They worked well at first, but after about a year or so,
the fronts became warped. Had them turned, they went right back to being
warped. Sorta the reasoning is that, at least on mine, was that there was
too many holes so the amount of cooling the cross-drilling actually does
compared to the amount of material that was removed to dissipate heat is
counter balanced, and the rotors perform less. If you don't mind replacing
rotors every time you run the car hard it'd be ok. But for a daily
driver....I would recommend upgrading the brakes to a larger rotor and 4 POT
caliper. One more note about the cross-drilling. I would not recommend
doing this yourself. If it is not done properly you'll one screw the rotor
up, and two if it's ok when you do the drilling there is a good chance of
the rotor cracking.
I've nuked more rotors on my car than I share to say. One more thing you
could do is see if the new rotors and calipers from a newer gt legacy fit on
the older ones. I believe the rotors are just a little bit bigger, because
of the stock wheel size being larger. Or just get the huge rotors and 4 POT
setup
If you want an aftermarket rotor that will provide better cooling. I would
suggest having the rotors slotted. It removes less material, and provides
paths for brake gasses to escape and maintain a level of braking.
well I've gone on here...and I've got class in 15 min. If you have any
other questions comments....do share.....

beware, drilling your own rotors can have dangerous side effects.

Indeed. I recommend two words instead: "Brembo Powerslot".

That's the way to go.....the only problem may be finding them. I looked and
looked for several months, but my old rotors were shot...so I just bought a
set of subaru rotors. They're workin good with my new pads...but they're
not power slots...
