Peep that out. It's like Vikash's tool, but with analog display and multiple displays at a time. As he noted, and Vikash has said many a time, the less variables shown the faster it will update. I need to buy a good laptop and test this bitch.

This is probably the best thing that has come from those VW guys in a while.

that and the fact that it RUNS IN FREAKING WINDOWS
omg.
I need an ECU with a working diagnostic port ASAP.

I saw this too... Waiting on a MAX232 sample so I can build the adaptor they mention.

Neat. I kinda wish he'd mentioned my scantool on the page (especially since he's asking for donations) though. The ROM ID information (resaearched by me) was copied out of my code, the image of the connector (created by me) was taken from the last version of my scantool's web page, much of the INI file is based on my research as well, and some the comments were actually lifted straight out of the comments in my code.
Oh well.
Actually, I think some of the stuff copied from my stuff won't work. I don't see transfer function specifications in the INI file, and they're not the same for some earlier ECUs.
Mike - If you're impatient, on many computers, you can actually get away with using a 1489 to shift levels instead, and those are carried by many Radio Shacks.

Vikash,
Email him, and tell him you would like credit.

Yeah, I guess I will...

yea, that would be seriously messed up if you didnt get any credit! (and donations for that matter!

)

Cool Vikash. I'll keep that in mind if I decide I really want to give it a go, and the sample hasn't shown up yet.

I would insist on it.
3800+ lines of assembler isn't any easy task.

Yeah you should.

Looks like he's at least given credit to the romid finders.

Here's a question...
Isn't Vikash's serial cable a basic and roughly accurate TTL to RS232 translator? In essense, it would work, right?
something I will have to try this evening...

Yea I'd like to use Vikash's cable if possible, theirs looks way more complex

I wonder if you used a DB9 to USB adapter and spliced the wires to the select monitor connector if that would work.
Or for that matter, if you could just use a USB cable and splice to the select monitor.

I guess i have to be the lab rat for everyone.
Btw, Vikash's cable doesn't work for this scantool, I get no response - which I had anticipated. However, Vikash's scantool works fine with his cable, so I know my ECU was responding properly and all that good stuff.
I see a market in building these cables, The IC circuit is pretty simple. I'd build them if people would buy them and I could make a little profit off it.

You're quite skilled at ruining someone's hopes and dreams of mod money, arentcha?

Looking at those cables, it's probably be pretty easy to make those short cables.
I suppose I'll have to take a run down to fry's electronics and see if I can find some similar stuff.

Wow, this would be sweet if it works on an OBDI 93-95 impreza. The ROM id listed as 93-94 NA wouldnt happen to work for a 93 n/a imp would it ~sigh~

Well, I emailed him. I got no reply but I guess he put my name next to the ROM IDs that I "contributed." Too bad some of those won't work...
My serial cable does level-shifting but not inverting, so it doesn't subsitute for a MAX232. The discrete circuit presented on that page is pretty simple, but actually the simplest way to go is probably a 7805 and a MAX233. You can get away with using just those two chips and nothing else. It can cost a buck or two more though.
I could imagine that someone might manufacture a USB-to-RS232 adapter that would work, but most such adapters won't. They tend to be designed for things like Palm syncing, so they don't bother making them work at nonstandard bitrates and stuff. That's just been my experience, though.

They work at 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400 and 48000 if my memory serves me correctly

Can someone whip up a parts list using Digikey part numbers?
Ive tried searching for some components and each one seems to turn up a dozen results and I dont know which one to use
And vikash, you said you could do this with just a 7805 and an MAX233
How?

Something like this:
Connect MAX233 pins 10 and 16 together.
Connect MAX233 pins 11 and 15 together.
Connect MAX233 pins 12 and 17 together.
Connect MAX233 pin 2 to Select pin 2.
Connect MAX233 pin 3 to Select pin 3.
Connect MAX233 pin 5 to DB9 pin 2.
Connect MAX233 pin 4 to DB9 pin 3.
Connect 7805 pin 1 to Select pin 5.
Connect 7805 pin 3 to MAX233 pin 7.
Connect 7805 pin 2, Select pin 9, MAX233 pins 6 and 9, and DB9 pin 5 together.
Enjoy.
As for a Digi-Key bill of materials, I'd do something like this:
7805, Digi-Key part number MC7805CT-BPMS-ND
MAX233, Digi-Key part number MAX233CPP-ND
DB9 connector, Digi-Key part number 209FE-ND
DB9 hood, Digi-Key part number 909GM-ND
Then you just need the radio harness adapter and some supplies like solder, heat shrink tubing, electrical tape, and 20-22 AWG hookup wire.
I guess you might also want a little circuit board and a box for the circuit. For the circuit board I recommend Radio Shack part number 276-159.

Vikash, your electronic genius boggles my mind!!
