Before i purchased my 93 wagon i was looking at a 91 5-speed sedan.
In conversation with Mike at SPD he mentioned that only about 400 of
them got into the US with the LSD.

Now while he's not the be-all, end-all of subie by any means, his
information about such things is usually right on.

Just thought all you 91 owners shouldn't assume you have an LSD based
on Sambo's tech manuals.

The manuals themselves do not say "this is a viscous limited slip
differential" on them. They don't say anything along those lines at
all for that matter. It simply states how to take it appart, service
it, and put it back together again. Unless you can identify a true
LSD by eye - the book will not tell you!

It is my understanding that the 91 lsd rear diff clearly states that it
is lsd on the case.

If it says something to the effect that it's LSD on the case, then it
is. If you have a 91 without a sticker or some form of designation,
then it's probably not. I'd think that the later dates, especially
into 91, are probably not LSD.

If I wern't at work I would run outside and check. I'll take a look when I get home tonight. I am pretty darn sure I don't have a true LSD by the way it reacts in parking lots etc. and the replacement/upgrade to a true LSD is kinda pricy. And if what other people suggest regarding the transmission (incompatable with diff.) is true then it gets astronomically expensive to relace. The turbo upgrade will be a piece of cake compared to changing out that rear diff. :oP

The owners manual that comes with the car says that all turbos are LSD.

While I do agree that Mike knows quite a bit about Subes, I disagree about
his statement about a limited number of 91s getting the LSD. If you look in
the Subaru Parts Book( not the manuals), the LSD is listed as "VISCO DIFF
ASSY RR" part number 27020 AA000 . The application this is for are All 91
Turbo Sedans ONLY( Stick and auto). When Subaru changes something during the
same year production run, this is designated in the parts book, or there is
a supplement page sent to the dealership. For instance, a bolt for the brake
caliper on the 91 Turbos changes on cars made from Sept on. Those made
before then get the early bolt. I would almost guarentee if some 91 turbos
did not get the LSD, Subaru would have made mention of this somewhere.

All I know is:

A. I want a MECHANICAL LSD on my wagon. If I don't have one I'm going take a deep breath and see if I can find a bolt on - anyone have ideas? I found some here: http://www.autocaresubaru.com/drivetrains.html but I don't know if they'll work or not.

B. I am going to DIE waiting the next 2 hours to go home and look at my differential and my body panels because of all the AWESOME discussion we've had today.

I will have to agree with you on the mechanical LSD I have had a
problem with a viscose and like the Mechanical better. One thing we
all should watch is the fluid level in the rear diff. A small leak
can be real trouble because of the way these are made the very first
thing to lose lube is the pinion bearing and it will go away very
quickly. On the mechanical the only way I have found to get a
mecanical LSD is to get a 3.7 LSD from a Loyale turbo and transplant
the LSD unit or purchase the Loyale LSD unit from Subaru.I have done
a few of these both ways and it is quite a job even in a well equiped
shop.

...or you can buy a Kazz unit for an ungodly amount of money.
