just wondering what parts everyone has run into (for any make/model car) that seemed like they should be cheap, but really weren't...
I'm talking junkyard parts, your local classifieds, from the stealership, whatever

When I did the wheel bearings on Patti, and got the foam bushings that hold the dust boot up on the struts, I got totally ass-raped with no lube by the dealer. Over $300 for all 4. I've been meaning to check my own prices and see if they're really that high.
Always remember though, a car company doesn't make money selling cars, it makes money selling parts to fix/maintain the cars.
A $20,000 new car is worth $50,000 in parts, easy, if you were to buy each individual part for it at list price.
Oh shit, I forgot what I do for work. I probably shouldn't be saying this.

$50 for a 1.5 DIN pocket for below the radio.

Must have cost them all of 50 cents for the plastic...

$27 for a carrier piece on a VW 5MT. This thing is plastic and is supposed to handle gear slamming? It's a piece of plastic the thickness of a ruler and the size of my knuckles....

I spent about $120 on three of the five peices of plastic that make up the timing belt cover. f-ing robbery
I also laughed when the dealer quoted me $250 for EJ22T rod bearings.

The little plastic pop clips that hold the trunk lining in our cars:
Part number 94099AA200MA with a list price of over $2 each! The little plastic clip apparently costs about twice as much as a crossmember bolt. And the trunk trim uses a total of 16 of them, too.
So it'd be cheaper to bolt your trunk lining in with zinc coated M10x1.25 bolts and washers than plastic pop clips.

some guy on awdpirates is selling a set of 2006 STi
Seat covers and is asking $800 though they cost 2500 new.
I mean, wtf is it with subaru stuff and costing so much money? you look at parts for tons of other cars and they are just dirt cheap.
