Sam ?s Turbo AT vs non-Turbo AT

Sam I was surprised to read you couldn't find anything about the Automatic
Trans that is different from the turbo to the non-turbo. There are more
differences in the two transmissions than the engines! The turbo auto tranny
is the one used in the SVX and is really a completely different trans than
the non-turbo version. Unlike the non-turbo version, it also has a stand
alone Transmission Control Unit (TCU) that operates completely independently
from the Engine Control Unit (ECU). When mine started to go out I did a
nationwide internet search for a solution cause my car only cost me 10 grand.
A trans from the dealer was priced at 5 !!! It is the most complex system
in the car and not just anyone should be entrusted to work on it.
Most DEALERS don't even have techs that are turbo auto trans qualified, they
just remove and replace when there's a problem. After contacting about a
dozen sources that sounded like they knew what they were talking about, I
felt good to find someone that could rebuild mine for a grand. One thing
though, I've driven and enjoyed manual trannys most of my life, but this A/T
can really kick butt when you stomp down. It has a kind of fuzzy logic that
interprets throttle speed and position so that the shifts are harder and come
at a different place in the RPM band when you really punch it. My auto trans
and heavier wagon will kick you manual trans guys cars in the tailpipe. Come
on, somebody flame me, just come on!!!
