Since i have a miss at idle that i can't seem to shake, i'm going on
to the next step in maintenance, the fuel injection stuff. I've
replaced the filter but that hasn't helped, so i'm looking for the
best way to have the injectors cleaned.

I know that RC Engineering and injector.com both do great work in
testing and cleaning your injectors, but i'm a bit hesitant to remove
them and send them out, not to mention having to drive a truck for 3-
4 days!

When i asked around locally i found a place that uses the Sun/Snap-On
MotorVac system. It's supposedly the best and easiest way to clean
both the injectors and the combustion chamber.

It involves disconnecting the fuel pump and running a detergent
mixture through the fuel rail, injectors and whatnot. It's then
started and run for 30 minutes while digesting this mixture of
detergent and a fuel. It's supposed to be absolutely marvelous and
won't harm a thing.

Sounds like a winner! It's only $119 for the whole thing...

Has anyone had this done? Any thoughts?

Have you ever tried to pull the injectors out? It is hard to do with out
breaking them.
I have used an additive called "SeaFoam" recommended by one the local subi
mechanics. Try NAPA. About $5 a can. Just pour a couple cans in over a
couple of tanks of "High Test".

I had a real rough ideal that was in fact an injector that needed to be
replaced. The guy I that fixed it determined which one it was with out
having to remove them. Then he replaced the one that indicated bad. The one
he took out was wrecked when it was taken out.

Dave, I have had this done, around 85k it did help. The place that did it
said that the injectors are only meant to last about 100k mi so that they
would need to be replaced. I think that's probably true to a point,
depending on how the car was taken care of. I don't think it would hurt to
replace my injectors or get them rebuilt but I can't say I really want to do
that.

I'd go with the compressed can stuff for now....it's definitely more
concentrated, then the fuel additives. I think mine wasn't quite so
expensive but then again it was 5+ years ago.

recommended about every 60k or so-(I flush p/s @ 60 & brake system @ 30k
also). Cost was 1 hr. labor & the flushing agent-approx $75 total. I`ve been
experimenting with the Z-max fluids in the gas/oil/trans & am pleased so
far. With 144k+, no miss anywhere. ROD

I went ahead and did it last night. It's really fascinating how
simple it is and how good a job it does.

Basically they route the fuel to the machine and add their detergent
to it and run the car at idle for about 30 minutes. They then
disconnect the intake, spray out the throttle body and take it for a
spin.

The results aren't stellar but i can tell a big difference in power
off-boost. It pulls up hills and from lights with noticeably more
oomph.

Unfortunately the miss remains...

So i guess it could be a bad injector, or a cylinder with low
compression, or a vacuum leak i can't find. Any other ideas?

I saw the Z-max stuff. So you like it huh? I've played around with slick
50 and prolong back in the day....but I can't say I noticed extreme
increases, but Zmax's claims do look pretty good. Can you get it in auto
parts stores or is it mail order only? How long have you been using it..do
you have to add more every time you change oil?

While we're on the subject of fuel additives, if you get a chance, pick up
some BG 44K. It's expensive but it works. I'm not one for additives at all,
but the BG brand just seems to make fantastic stuff.

You can either add it to your fuel, or they have a system where they dump it
in a bag and hook the bag to the vacumn line. Then start the car and it will
suck all the 44K in very quickly, then you shut the car off so the 44K can
"cook" the carbon from the valves and piston tops and rings. I personally
never did it that way before, but just by putting it into the fuel tank
results in a difference( for me anyway). Good stuff for sure.

Oops. My bad, Dave. Just to refresh our memories, when exactly does it miss?
Only at WOT(full boost)? Anytime there is a slight load on the engine such
as going up a hill? Does it happen even when not under boost? Is it a hard
miss(jerky) or does it just sort of pulsate(hesitate on and off)? Maybe the
airflow meter?

They're better than the wires i had. I had a 3.5-4ohm difference in
resistance between the four wires and they were OLD!

I am leaning toward the possiblity that the coil is malfunctioning.
I'm going to test it again tonight and see what i come up with.

On my 90 Leg it had the same thing, rough ideal like a bad cam. Under WFO it
still seemed to pull strong. Ended up being an injector.

What steps did you take to find out it was an injector? My '90 does the same
thing.

I took it to an independent guy who trained all of the dealer Subaru
mechanics in Cinti, Oh.
Don't remember how he said he determined it. May have been as simple as
pulling the injector plug wires, until he found one that did not make the
car run worse. Before this he checked all cylinder pressures, fuel delivery
ect.

I gave up when I tried to remove one to check it, and could see I would
likely break the unit if I kept screwing with it. They are tight! If you are
successful at getting one out you could probably tell it was bad. The bad
one I got back was looking pretty dirty.

Dave, since it only does it at idle, maybe you can pull the plug wires off
one by one. When you pull one off and the car doesn't do anything
differently, then at least you would know what area it's coming from. Also,
did you try taking your Idle Air Control Valve apart and cleaning it good.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but a bad IACS on a first gen
Legacy isn't exactly uncommon. You can also try spraying something around
all the vacum lines/connections and gaskets to see if the idle goes up any.

Dave, the IACV simple controls the amount of air entering the engine at idle
since the throttle plate is shut tight. I believe it also raises the idle
when the AC/Defrost is on. It's on the right side of the throttle body(if
you're in the car) and the large hose from your resonator in the intake goes
to it.

As far as where to spray, just about anywhere there is a vacum line and/or
connection and around the throttle body gasket and intake gaskets. Your idle
should go up and/or smooth out if you spray the problem spot.

My 91 turbo was idling rough also kind of like a big block with a great cam.
I put on a new PCV last weekend and it seems to be idling ok now

Is it the round thing on the middle right with connections to the
resonator, another T and one more hose that goes to a
cylindrical canister out of the picture?

Josh-I use the Z-max every 6k miles as recommended-biggest difference was
about 2 mpg increase & a slightly better throttle response. Several auto
stores now have it & can be purchased w/o phoning in; if no one in your area
like Pep Boys or Auto Zone don`t have it, let me know & I`ll get you a name
& number to call. BTW, my Iridium plugs & 8mm wires are on the way-info soon
on any improvement. I`m doing a compression test before the plugs go in to
test the suitability for 55-75 HP increase by nitrous. I forgot to mention
that I`ve been using the `Max` for about 6 mos. Post again soon-ROD
