Hello fellow Subaru owners!

I´m a guy from Finland who owns a 1992 Legacy STW 4wd Turbo with
the
2.0 litre engine (EJ20), my second car of this type by the way, and I
was wondering if there are any other similar cars within this group.
It would be really interesting to get some info regarding performance
upgrades on this type of engine, i.e. what´s worth it and
what´s not.
I have made a chip -upgrade to my car and also "opened up" the
exhaust, so that it´s 2,5" all the way now. I also replaced the
air
filter with a performance drop-in filter, and the result currently
stands at 173kW (dyno tested).
I´ve had some problems though... e.g. when changing the exhaust,
the
turbo pressure got too high and it was cut off every now and then. We
then ad to make some dumb modifications to keep it down a bit, but
within a couple of weeks I will (hopefully) have it fixed. I will
also have my car painted within this month (changed from silver to
yellow... YESSSS), so I´m really looking forward to the end of
this
month. Anyway, if there is anyone else driving this type of car,
please let me know.

Hi from New Zealand.

I don't own your model, but the EJ20 is a common model in NZ. The
preferred sequence of mods seem to be...

- 2.5" exhaust
- boost bleed valve in the waste gate actuator line, or arguably
better is a boost restrictor valve and accumulator, or other
pneumatic control device
- BOV
- intake snorkel and cone filter

..at which point, further power gains require...

- electronic boost controller, fuel cut defenders, etc
- mod chip for the stock ECU

...or

- replacement ECU

Probably the most important but difficult to do, is ditching the
water-cooled intercool to a front mount design. I have seen it done,
and it requires switching the throttle body to the front of the
manifold (ie. welding closed the stock feed on the back, and
machining a front feed), then cutting gaps in the support frame for
the radiator to feed the intercooler hoses between the bonnet (hood
for the US people). This was a pretty radical car... developed 400bhp!

Better and safer power gains can be made by keeping the boost
pressure around 12lb and lowering the temperature of the intake
charge, than by raising the boost to 15lb on the stock intake and ECU
system.
