Squeaky Crankshaft Pulley

Hi,

I've noticed that on some days when I start my car, there is an audible squeak comming from the crankshaft pulley on my 98 legacy 2.2 engine. It goes away briefly when I spray it with WD40 so I know that it is not the belt. The squeak persists until the engine has been fully warmed up and driven. Does anybody know what is causing this problem and how I could fix it? or if it is indicitave of a more serious problem. I have tried placing a thicker grease behind the crankshaft pulley and that helps for some time but the noise keeps comming back.

Thanks

could it be a slipping accessory belt?

This happened on my 93 years ago. The pulley is two pieces with a thin rubber piece between. The outer ring was rotating around the inner, causing the noise, as far as I could tell.

My solution to the problem was to replace it with a UOR underdrive pulley, though any number of lightweight, non-underdriven units would work just fine.
