It's pulling oil into the compressor side, think its rebuildable?

I was planning on running my TD04 for now, and sending the VF39 to deadbolt for a rebuild, port, polish and clipping. Good idea?

When I get it back, Id have a JDM TD04 and a Forester XT TD04 up for grabs, if you're interested get your dibs in now :P

Although I have no direct experience with turbine clipping, everyone I've consulted recommended against it. It's supposed to assist spool-up with larger turbos on smaller engines, but can't we spool the VF39 without too much trouble already anyway?

All we need now is someone to animate that pic and having the turbos dancing back and forth

Who have you consulted? I did a bit of homework when I got my TD05. You hear around the internet that clipping is bad, but when you start to dig into things, and you ask people that know their stuff, clipping can be beneficial on certain turbo/engine combos. It can help spool up, as well as help eliminate boost creep. The other thing too is who does the clipping. If the shop does not change their blanchard grinder frequently, then the clip will not have the accuracy it should.

Just local guys into cars back in FL... I spoke to Deadbolt about it too and figured I was just getting a sales pitch. It just seems like something that can really screw up your turbo if it's done wrong, but I can see how it could be helpful. Them blades are spinning around 100k RPM -- just a tiny bit of imbalance can cause a lot of unnecessary wear.

Anyone on the board have a clipped turbine? Who did it, any before / after results to share?

My TD05 has a clipped turbine, deadbolt did it. However I have no before & after experience.

How many miles have you put on the TD05? I was previously planning on saving up for a deadbolt 18g with a clipped turbine, until I realized how much it mattered that the shop know exactly what it was doing. (I've since had to drop some cash on my transmission, a new SS, and even the VF36 setup I decided on)

Do you like it, what do you think of the turbo? Did you get a 16g? 18g? 20g?

Edit: This is not to say that I don't think Deadbolt knows what they're doing, from what I've seen they have some great products and stand behind their work. I just didn't end up going with the clipped 18g.

And by clipping some of the turbine blades to let more of the exhaust gas escape around them instead of transferring force to them, aren't you sacrificing the top end of your turbo's capabilities in general? I was under the impression that this was an unavoidable tradeoff with turbine clipping.

I've only put about 100 miles on it, plus I have not really boosted past the stock boost limit, so I can't really comment too much on the turbo.

However from what I have driven it, I like it, and do think it has much more potential then the vf11. I have the 16G monster ported with compressor side P&P as well.

I would imagine that no matter what, even the small 16G would be heads and tails above the stock VF11. That thing is tiny. :)

So you're breaking it in now? That's cool. Let us know when you push it a bit and how it spools and holds to redline and such, I'm interested to hear how it does.

I'm runnig a vf8 on my legacy. I've had it boosted at 17psi, 15psi, and 14psi. I'm currently running it at 13-13.5. It pulls strong without hesitation. I've hit the rev limiter in first gear more times than I can count and have learned to shift before I think I need to.

The spool up is noticably slower than the vf11, but not so much as to cause a problem. You just wait a split second longer than it hits pretty hard. In 4th gear I've punched it to see where it would hit full boost and I think I was getting the 13 pounds that was normal at about 2900 rpms and by 3100 with a lot of engine load I was sitting at 14 (so about a psi of overboost). Now this is on a vf8 with brush bearings or whatever they are called I think. So if you had a ballbearing turbo you'd be doing faster spool-ups than that. The vf8 is a smidge smaller than the TDO5, though, so I would say take that into consideration.
