does a ej22t cost with about 180,000 or less miles on it?

ok so i really wanna do this because most people here say it's an ok swap.
BUT, i keep referring to this subaru repair shop here in tacoma and this guy keeps saying that it really is not that easy of a swap and it's a lot more complicated than it sounds. I really i'd have to rewire the ecu and all that crap. but is it really that hard? or should i just find a turbo legacy.

Take a read of Legacy777's conversion story. he took an auto transmission NA powered 1990 wagon and did both the Ej22T and 5spd conversion on it. It's a fair bit easier on a car that came stock with a 5spd, or if you have an auto car and stay auto. But it's not a hard swap. It's actually one of the easiest swaps out there because so much is the same between the 2 cars.
Now, converting an Impreza to EJ22T power is a completely different story. It's a major hassle and for all the trouble, I see no reason to do anything but a WRX swap on an Impreza if one wants turbo power...

Nope. And the replacement ECU just plugs in. What you need to do is switch the locations of the cam and crank sensor wiring to the ECU, and add the wiring for the boost control stuff. It's about a dozen wires or so to make it work...
And if you are having trouble finding an Ej22T, you can do essentially the same thing with an EJ20G from an JDM Legacy. The only extra step there is adding in the coil on plug igntion stuff. OR, you could run the EJ20G on the Ej22T ECU and keep the wasted spark. Pretty much every variant of this has been done by members here.
I am currently installing a '96 WRX EJ20G into my '91 SS. I have most of the additional harness work done, and the next step is just to pull the engine and get the wiring in there. And in case you are wondering, I am not selling off my stock EJ22T...

could i just pick up a wiring harness for a ej22t?
i found this site.... http://www.ccrengines.com/
and they said that they would sell me the engine, plus alternator, fuel rails, power steering pump, etc. plus the ECU with a wiring harnes for it, all for $4,500.
think this is a good deal or not?

CCR is a great business. They are friends of mine. But with them you pay for what you get. For that price you would be getting a remanufactured Ej22T. Not a rebuilt engine, but one step beyond that with respect to attention to detail. They do great work, but for that kind of money you can buy 3 "good used" Ej20G's and have 60-100 more HP right out of the box...
And you don't even need a wiring harness for an Ej22T. What you need is the wiring for the boost control. All the rest of the wiring stays the same in your car...

Haha, wasn't me. I haven't dealt with superrupair in a long time. I'm probably going to let my car sit for a while and just build the engine while I drive my other car. The mad Stanza.
I swear the things quick lol.

The Ej22T block is one of the best ever that Subaru produced. But the heads do leave a bit to be desired. If you get a similar era Ej20G, the block will be just as good, and the heads will be better. The tradeoff will be that you lose .2l of displacment, which has quite an impact on low end torque. But when you can get a low mileage EJ20G from Nippon Motors in California for $750+ freight, it's hard to argue with.asc_up wrote:ok. so what's the difference with the ej22t and ej20g?
i heard that the ej22t was one of the best motors by subaru.
and i thought you said there was something about having the ej20g in the car that wasn't good... wasted spark?
The EJ20G did use a different ignition system. It used a coil on plug igntion. The Ej22's (turbo and NA) were both wasted spark. It's not rocket science to put the Ej22 parts onto an EJ20G. You install the Ej22 intake manifold harness to the Ej20G engine and you are pretty much there. You do have to zip tie the coil pack to the top to manifold, but that's not rocket science. There may be a couple of wires that need lengthening, like the IAC, but I am not sure about that. Best to find a thread from someone who has done the swap. You can run this on the Ej22T ECU with just the addition of the turbo control wiring and the cam/crank switch that I mentioned before...
If this all sounds like goobly gook, then you may be in over your head. But if it's not your daily driver and you can take your time to work your way through it, we can help you through it and you'll come out all right in the end...

haha ok. i think i'm gonna look for one.
what if i could find an ej20g ecu and harness? should i use that instead of the 22t ecu?
and can i just throw the alternator from my ej22 to the ej20g? and the water pump, etc.?
my dad's taken his engine out a few times and done this and i've helped him, so i have a pretty good handle on this. i'll just ask him for help and then definitely you guys. i can't wait to start this. sounds fun. lol.

ok so i'm gonna buy the ej20t from nippon motors lol.
the website said that included with the engine is the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, fuel injection, alternator, distributor, usually partial wire harnesses that are cut near the engine, oil pan, valve cover, pulleys, etc.
what else will i need....downpipe? obviously the ecu. anything else?

dont get the ej20t. it is twin turbo and the secondary turbo won't clear our steering/master cylindar, and.........it has smaller turbos....
you need the ej20g, its a single turbo motor. And try to get one with the top mount air-water intercooler.
