So you wanna run a Garrett, huh?

Sounds simple enough, doesn't it? Just different flanges right?

Not so fast! Nothing is ever that easy. Especially if you want to do it right.

I thought I could get an internally gated GT series for a silvia and use a matching dump pipe to mate to the exhaust. Nope. Turbo sits upside down relative to how it is in a subie. $95 later, I've got this beautiful T25 to 3" V-band adapter from ATP Turbo. ouch #1

OK, how about oil feed. A nice braided stainless teflon line should fit the bill right? Again, not real easy. The feed from the head uses a M12x1.25 thread. WTF? It took me a week to find an adapter, and lucky enough, it went to a -4 AN fitting. Sweet.

What about the fitting on the turbo? I said screw it and paid out the ass for one from ATP, with the proper restrictor hole. Without it, too much oil pressure would blow the seals out on this ball bearing unit in short order.

Of course the oil drain is different, so $20 later, I've this nice drain flange. That and a 3/8 NPT hose barb should take care of it. Oh wait, the bolts that came with the flange are wrong. Back to the hardware store. Damn. This is really adding up in a hurry

How about coolant? Again, weird threads. Garrett decided with M14x1.5 threads this time. ATP sells banjo fittings with the bolt and washers. $15 a piece. Screw that noise. I might as well use AN fittings. They ended costing about the same, with the hose ends, but in the end are much more versatile.

Otherwise I've been working on little things. I drilled and tapped for my water temp gauge and also for the EGT sensor. Not as bad as I thought it would be. I'll be wrapping the exhaust manifold one of these days, thats why I cut off the posts for the heat sheilds.

www.anplumbing.com is where I got the coolant fittings, m12x1.25 to -4 adapter, and gauge adapter. Jay at Northern Engine Supply hooked up the braided line, matching hose ends, and angled apaters.

I never had that much trouble running a garrett on my legacy.

dont we already have a water temp gage in the cluster?

What did you do about fittings and what not? I knew I needed new lines since I'm rotating it. The coolant banjos were too small for this turbo. Maybe the GTs are different :smt017

I wanted a guage that had actual temp derivations on it. My factory one has never moved past the middle when warm, even when doind doughnuts for 10 min in a parking lot. I dunno. Just something I felt I needed to do.

Try having your thermostat fail or giant air pockets in your coolant system, then you'll see that gauge climb up fast ;-). Had that happen to me last week...

I got the garrett rotated with an up pipe and a down pipe. The banjo bolt fit right on the head. It was pretty much plug and play except I had to rework my intercooler pipes and Intake.

after looking at your picture, my oil feed line looks a bit wider in diameter than yours.

Did you have an issue with the wategate actuator being cocked at an angle because of how the turbo is clocked? When I go rotated I always use an external gate, but a few customers have had this problem on small turbo setups.

I'll be making a bracket for the actuator when I get to that part of the install. Since I don't know exactly how it'll be clocked without it in the car, I don't want to commit to a set spot just yet. The compressor outlet will probably oriented downward, near to where the turbine inlet is. My AC and all assciated harware is gone and I'll move that dealie for the cruise controll so that will free up a good amount of room. We'll see how it all plays out.

I'll go external gate eventually, but probably not untill I update the heads, and maybe a bigger snail since I'll be getting topfeed injectors and might as well go real big

Where did you get the turbo, up pipe flange, and down pipe flange at. Also were did you place you water temp sensor the picture is a little confusing and I just bought a water temp sensor and was wondering were to put the sensor?

this is good shit, ive been contemplating puttig on a t28 bb from my sr onto the tleg. cant wait to see some mounting and intercooler hookup. good work keep posting info!

edit - what compressor housing is that youre running, it kinda looks like a 2871 or something

I got the turbo off ebay from himini racing. The inlet flange, gasket, and weldon v-band flange were off of ebay. The adapter was from http://www.atpturbo.com

As far as the temp goes, i pur it in the little flat spot at the front end of the coolant bridge. You'd need it off the motor to be able to drill and tap it, let alone get at it. It seems like that spot was meant to be tapped.

Well, I actually ordered a 2871R, but this is definatly bigger than my buddies disco potatos he put in his 300ZX. ATP sells this turbo with the .63 A/R turbine housing (mine is the .86) and calls it the 3071R-WG, for the internal gate. The housing is just bigger, but the wheel is still a 71 mm.

I was wondering when you weld on the t3 flange to the up pipe could you post those pics? Im thinking about doing the same kind of swap, seems a lot cheaper to go this way than spending 6-800$ for a hybrid, plus its a garrett and most turbo shops could rebuild one of these no problem.

No prob. I've been posting updates here http://www.bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=28946

When I get to that part, there'll be plenty of pics.
