I am considering tweaking this car starting with exhaust and manual
turbo boost but am curious about what an intercooler does for you.
Everyone says you must have one before you boost your boost but is it
for engine safety or performance? Just what is it's function?

Well it does serve a pretty important purpose and can be quite beneficial.
Don't know if you ever notice on a cold day the car seems more peppy...well
the air is denser so when it combusts it expands more and more quickly
creating more power....when a turbo crompresses air it heats the
air...making the temp difference, not as great, reducing horsepower...Also
it can create pre-ignition...the air fuel gets soo hot it ignites from the
heat of compressing it.

Intercooler, brings down the intake air temps preventing that, and will give
you more horsepower.
