Ok so I've rebuilt a new 2.2L and installed it into the Legacy. All the old intake controls/injection/MAF etc remain as before. So when I start the engine it fires up OK runs for a few secs then dies(from cold) If I tickle the trottle it will keep running but it can't hold a steady RPM. One running a little I can let it idle. It starts going from 1000 up to 2000 and back and slowly after a few mins settles down to 850 rpm. Once warm it seems like I press the trottle and there is a delay before the revs kick in. If I try to hold it at any rpm it holds back runs really rough with lots of poping out the exhaust. Then sometimes it runs really clean and reponds then back to rough running.

Things I've done. Swpped Aux air valve,O@ sensor for a EBAY special, swapped Exhaust as the other cat was glowing red! now no cat. swapped plugs,temp sensor is fairly new. checked timing. any clues?

Now remember this rebuild has been going on for a year! so I just remembered when removing the MAF unit to fit a remote I dropped it on the floor from about the fender height, silly me. Could that be the problem? are these little buggers fragile? cuz it's feels like it's running to rich hence the very hot cat.

If you drop it, that qualifies as making something fragile!

Yeah, measure the output of the MAF with a meter. It should read .8 or so at idle, and when you rev the motor, rise up to about 1.2...

The center wire out of the five is the one to measure.

That's for the tip. Here's what I did this morning. I took off the MAF to check for any broken or dirty. Nowt! so I thought I'd warm it up. Once warm I was just going to do the check you mentioned. I did notice it popped back through the intake. Which in my side draught weber days meant to lean. So I put my hand half over the MAF intake as I had away from the air box. Perfect! the engine idled smooth and reved up as it should. So now what? new MAF ?check fuel pressure ? or new fuel pump? For temp I've half taped the intake with duct tape!

Everything esle seems good.

BINGO!!!!!! swapped the MAF then the engine fired up did what an engine should do!

Thanks 206er and Blackbart for doing stella job of sending the MAF in double quick time.

Now I just have to get the exhaust welded and a road test should be in order.
