Hey all, I just bought a 91 Turbo Legacy and I have been going through everything trying my best to make it perfect.

Well, somewhere in that process my sunroof stopped working...it was working (opening/closing) when I parked it....now its not and my stupid manual doesn't include the wiring diagrams for the sun roof????? Can anyone tell me what/where to check.

Thanks so much!!!! Justin

Mine does this intermittantly. Here are a couple ideas:

1. If you hear the motor "trying" to move the glass the edge of the rubber trim my be binding on the lip of the roof skin. Mine has done this a few times. It's happened in early spring after a long period during which the sunroof has not been opened. I was able to hold the UP switch while gently pushing upwards on the rear edge of the glass from inside the car. This would encourage the back edge of the sunroof to pop up and allow access to clean the rear edge. After that I was able to fully open the glass and I cleaned the exposed inside lip of the roof skin. Also clean as much of the rubber trim around the roof glass.

2. If there is no motor sound when you push the button you may have an intermittant electrical connection. A temporary solution that has worked for me is to gently push upward on the headliner in the area of the dome light, right behind the roof opening. If I do this while holding the OPEN button, the roof will start moving and work normally for days or weeks at a time. I intend to remove the roof to reseal it, at which time I'll troubleshoot the intermittant connection.

3. On the two instances that the above techniques did not get the roof working I had to use the manual crank, which should be stored in the lid of your center console arm rest. You'll have to remove the plastic plug in the headliner behind the dome light to insert the crank. If you don't have the crank handle in your arm rest you can just use an allen wrench of the proper size. Maybe 4mm?

Good luck.

I'm gonna hijack this thread. I have issue #2 from the second msg in this post. Even since I got this car, I have a sunroof that works about 5% of the time. When it works, it works smoothly and quickly, but its completely random when it actually decides it wants to work. It seems to me that I have a bad connection in there, and I was hoping to find it without having to pull the whole headliner out. Today, i dropped the control / map light assembly and everything seemed to be pretty solid, so Im guessing its somewhere near the motor.

I have tried Ultrasonic's method, and a lot of pushing, poking, and striking on the whole liner have proven futile.

Do any of you know where a common place for a fault would be? Have any of you had this problem and successfully fixed it? I almost wish it was leaking, becuase we know all about how to fix that problem, lol.

(searches havent turned up anything for me on this topic, but if there is another thread out there, a link would be appreciated... thanks)

mine seems to get stuck.. i can always hear it try to work and if i mess with enough it will always open and work just fine. some times it just doesnt want to vent but if i push down from the outside it will open... wish i could figure out that problem too!

Just a thought if its moving but sticks. Get out a small screw driver and put some grease on the tracks. Mine would stick all the time and leak. I pulled the whole thing out. Sanded the rail seals and used some windshield sealant. Cleaned the tracks entirely and i havent had a single problem with it since. Defiantly worth the few hours of work to pull the headliner and pan.

Ive got a bunch of pics of the process here:
