Exhaust Systems

Fellow Subarites,
I have many questions regarding mods on my new Legacy Wagon. How much HP can you expect to get using a Header/Muffler system on a stock 2.5 165HP engine?
Also, How easy or difficult is it to change the brain chip in the car?
Thanks,

IIRC, you can expect to get around 13-15 hp with a full exhaust.
for headers I'd reccommend MRT. Borla is much cheaper but is only really good for some sound. it doesn't help the power out much. MRT has proven gains (There's a dyno chart out there somewhere).
for the back of the exhaust I'd reccomment either a Brullen or Stromung catback with the medium exhaust note. the loud is too loud IMO and the mild isn't throaty enough.
for the midpipe I'd go to minake or a similar place and have them make you a custom midpipe with no resonator. it's cheaper than buying a brand name and it's onbly a section of pipe.
with these mods your car will sound much more like a "proper" subaru. expect a CEL with the header install. to get rid of it, the best thing to do is buy some ceramic header wrap. it'll make your exhaust a little quieter, but it will keep the EGTs up so you don't get the "cat efficiency" CEL.

by Geddy do you mean Greddy? They're good, but most people haev either stromung or brullen. I think most of the mufflers and/or catbacks coem stainless. I think the MRT headers are also either stainless or high grade mild with coatings. I haven't heard of any recent setups rusting away. There were problems with older systems but I think they've been eliminated.

I suggest looking at the TWE header. Im going to use this header in my exhaust. Looks to be the best design so far for our vehicles.
