I've just read the below

I got a used 92' Legacy AWD wagon, I don't have an user manual but I borrow a

copy of Haynes manual from the library, on it they recommanded disable the 4WD

mode by inserting a spare fuse into the FWD connector inside the engine

compartment while towing, otherwise it may damage the transfer clutch. This is

my first 4WD car, I was just wondering if I set this car to Front WD would it

yield me better fuel milages? Will I do harm to the car if I do so? also

someone told me that the AWD on this car turns on automatically when the car

feels the wheel is out of traction, otherwise it is running on FWD, is it

true? Because I didn't found any switch inside the car to switch mode about

AWD. By the way, I am living in Twin Cities of Minnesota, so ... I know about

snow, but just wondering.

Well it's a little more complicated than just stickin a fuse in....It
depends on alot of things...first what type of tranny do you
have...manual and auto are two different things too. One uses a
mechanical solution to provide AWD, and is 50/50 all the time. Auto
uses electronics to provide the torque front and rear...and If I
remember correctly normal driving it is 60/40 or 80/20....I don't
remember. With the manual...you can't make it any more front or rear
biased. The auto is decided by the computer....I don't know of anyway
to make rear wheel drive unless you reprogrammed the whole ecu or
something....WAY out of my league

sure someone else can give you some good tips.

Subaru's system is AWD, with the manual trans having a 50-50 front-rear split using a viscous coupler between the front and rear diffs. The system is not 4WD as such.

It is possible to make it RWD, but requires removal of the front diff's crown wheel and pinion, and CV's and axles, etc.

If you intend dragging the car, doing burnouts, etc... the trans and driveline is barely adequate to withstand the abuse.

Hi

I just want to zoom around normal roads, in the wet ( I live in the UK) sliding the back out like I do on my motorbike.

4wd makes it a little boring, and I miss the fun of RWD

PS what do you mean "not 4wd as such"

The below was stolen from the www.mrtrally.com.au ...and applies to manual
trans Subarus, with the exception of auto trans which is an entirely
different setup as it does not have the centre viscous coupling, and the
WRX-tyoe RA which uses a mechanical rear LSD

How the Subaru 4WD System works....
The Subaru 4wd system on WRX, Forrester, GT etc is a well designed package,
BUT it has its limitations

CENTRE DIFFERENTIAL
A maximum of 50% drive can go to the rear. The rest obviously going to the
front. The viscous Diff is a speed sensing type Diff and operates similar to
an auto Trans torque converter, in that it never achieves full lock up.
Because of this fact, it is possible under certain circumstances that you
can create large speed differences between front and rear, ie. if the front
wheels lose traction and not the rear wheels.

In some circumstances the car can get stuck, on steep angled driveways or
extremely slippery conditions. This is true, but it has to be extreme!!!!!

If you sit and spin the a rear wheel off the ground for longer that 30
seconds constantly, you can permanently damage the rear diff !! The life
span of the Diff is greatly reduced by heat build up generated under
extreme speed differences.

With one wheel off the ground or on a slippery surface the rear diff will
try to drive the rear wheel still on the ground or with most grip, but it
can only exert a certain amount of force. If the force required to move the
car is exceeded , then the diff gives up and lets all the drive go the the
free-spinning rear wheel. The Viscous Diff has a maximum operating capacity,
it will try and maintain this until such time as heat build up renders it
inoperative.

The rear diff is also viscous-based, so won't "lock up and drive" like LSDs
on mechanical type units.
