Hey, ive had this problem for a while, well after i had torque bind and drove for 10,000KM then got the problem fixed and its still there Not like VERY loud, doesn't seem like the rear diff either, if u slide it into neutral its gone. Guessing front diff(going to get the fluid changed) or torque converter. What do you guys think?

im having this same exact problem. it seems to be coming from the rear. i just changed my rear diff fluid and the front tranny and diff fluid was changed a couple months ago. the only thing i can come up with is one of the U-joints is going out, but i dont know which one.

I changed my oil as well. Didn't make a difference, just a little smoother. What are these U-joints??

the universal joints on the driveshaft. theres three of them. one of them on your car is no good as well as mine.

I don't think it's a U-joint. I have a FWD legacy and it does the same thing. In neutral it's silent. I vote for worn bearing somewhere or differential. Changing the fluid isn't a bad idea either way.

It's my daily driver beater, so I just turn up the radio ;-)

I think i need a new front right bearing and rear left as they have 190k.

most likely a worn gear/bearing.
I say this, due to my "whine" on coasting in my CRX after I replaced a bearing that had gone bad. When the bearing went out, it wore the gear mating surfaces slightly on the load bear side over time So when i replaced the bad bearing, when the gear meshed back normally, it was worn enough but held in place with a good bearing and it "whined on all deceleration" there was nothing detrimental other than the noise. its common once you have ruined a bearing, and driven on it that way.
Just inspect the gears when you replace the bearing.

Hmm had the front left bearing and rear right bearing replaced. 2 fronts were shot BADLY and the one rear was VERYYYYYYYY bad. Subaru replaced those bearings so not sure.

i removed my driveshaft and the rear most u joint doesnt move as smoothly as the other two.

seems like a u-joint on mine.
