legacycentral bbs

I have a 91 Legacy turbo. It has had its fair share of problems but
is a pleasure to drive. The newest problem it has is cold starting.
The engine will crank just fine but it just won't fire up until about
8 seconds after the key is turned, it tries and eventully catches but
only after a couple of hail maries. This problem doesn't happen when
the engine is warm. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It sounds like a dirty or bad Mass Airflow Sensor. The MAF is a
metal cylinder that is located after the plastic air intake box.
There are four screws connecting it (I am assuming that it is the
same for the turbo and N/A engine). I would clean it, but be
careful, it is very delicate. I think Radio Shack has a spray
cleaner for electronic parts that will work. My Dad had a similiar
problem with his Saab and he broke the filament in the MAF while
cleaning it. If cleaning it doesn't work, you will probably have to
get a new one.

Have you checked the computer codes? I am pretty sure that a bad MAF
is one of the codes. I have not had this problem with my Legacy yet,
but I know some members of the board have and may be able to give you
a little more detailed info than I have. I hope this helps and if

Any Check Engine lights?

I had a faulty Coolant Temp Sensor that made it a pain in the neck to
start on occasion.
